Beyoncé's Dad Is a Nightmare for Dreamgirls

The supposed rift between Beyoncé Knowles and her Dreamgirls costar, Jennifer Hudson, may have been greatly exaggerated.

Rumors have been swirling that Beyoncé is miffed because Hudson is the movie's obvious breakout star for her role as powerhouse vocalist Effie White. But sources told me today that Beyoncé has always known Effie was a showier role than Beyoncé's own soft-spoken Deena Jones. "Beyoncé is a confident girl," a pal tells me. "She doesn't get jealous of people."

So, where did these rumors get started? It sounds like Beyoncé's father, Matthew Knowles, may be to blame.

I'm told things soured between the Knowles family and Ms. Hudson because Daddy Knowles tried unsuccessfully to woo the former American Idol contestant as a client to his Houston-based Music World Entertainment management company.

"He tried to sign her halfway through production of Dreamgirls because he wanted to be her manager," my source says, "but Jennifer turned him down. That's when things really went south."

Although Hudson already had management during this time, a source tells me Matthew has recently told some people he's actually been managing her "for a while now."

"He walks around saying he's her manager, and everyone is like, 'No, you're not,' " a source says.

In other words, it doesn't look like Beyoncé has a problem with Hudson getting so much of the Dreamgirls attention. It looks like it's Daddy's bruised ego that's causing the ruckus.

I'm told that Daddy was so insulted by her refusal to sign with him that he demanded the movie be re-edited to lessen Hudson's screen time and boost Beyoncé's. He argued that his daughter was being shortchanged but was rebuffed by the studio and the filmmakers. In one meeting with director Bill Condon, I'm told, Beyoncé's mom, Tina, went into a "tirade" about how he ruined the movie for her daughter. "It was supposed to be her Oscar role," Tina hissed, according to a source.

Matthew and Tina Knowles did not return calls by deadline.

As for Beyoncé and Hudson, a source close to Dreamgirls says they get along just fine. "It's the dad," the source said. "He's just like Curtis, Jamie Foxx's character in Dreamgirls."

All the drama aside, today was a good day to be a Dreamgirl. The movie nabbed five Golden Globes nominations. Two for Beyoncé, one apiece for Hudson and Eddie Murphy and another for Best Picture in the musical or comedy category

Jennifer Hudson's version of "and I'm telling you" is excellent.  Sounds like she owns the damn song.

LMAO.  I was just gonna wait 'till it comes on TMN.  Doesn't seem like the type of film I would spend money on to watch in the theatre.

LadyDay,

I question that. About a week ago. Beyonce was bring interviewed on E about Dreamgirls and when Beyonce was asked about Jennifer Hudson's nomination for a Golden Globe and Oscar award, she told the reporter( coming form her won mouth) that " if I gained 12 pounds and acted  like that I would be nominated too." when  I heard B say that, I wondered how many overweight people did she offend and on top of that I thougt that she was bring derogatory. To me if you think highly of a person , why stoop to that remark? Beyonce must remember she's not that little herself and is prone to gaine weight --another admission coming from her own mouth. If there is a rift between them, I would believe it because of that remark she made about Jennifer Hudson. On top of that Jen is a better singer and actress that Beyonce.

Jennifer Hudson didn't accidently gain weight, she was told to as a requirement of the role, like Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones because the character she is playing in the movie is big.  So Beyonce wasn't dissing in the sense you imagine.  Jennifer has probably already shrank back down to what she was before.

I saw it and loved it!

I had great fun trying to guess who Eddie Murphy's character is based on (could be anyone), and Jennifer Hudson is a REVELATION! Whenever she sang she lit up the screen. I was almost in tears at some points.

I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone - don't listen to the haters, see for yourself.

James Brown.....could be. I thought maybe Marvin Gaye.

Worth the $10 ticket - most definately.

I'll be honest here, and what I am about to say many of you should know is genuine considering the cast.

This movie was excellent!  I normally don't support anything that coon Jamie Foxx or I wish I was White Beyonce does.  However, thankfully, they showcased the real singer in the movie and she could blow the skin off your face.  This movie had me raving, and I don't even care for movies all like that.  It was very tasteful, and didn't have much of any negativity about African people besides the silly conkin' hair do Jamie Foxx wore, as well as the wigs of the women, but those were simply the times the movie is plotted.  The only reason I saw the movie is because I went with a lady-friend.  If it wasn't for that, I would have skipped the movie because of my due prejudices for Jamie Foxx and Beyonce alone.  However, I will say that I am glad I saw it and I certainly will be purshasing (or copying) this on HD-DVD to add to my collection.  It is Oscar worthy from many different angles, so I whole-heartedly recommend it.  You will not be disappointed.

Vezz,

I want to see that movie sooo bad! I want to see it, primarily because of Jennifer Hudson. I'm glad that she is becoming big. It's just so miraculous that a young woman like her becomes an Oscar, Golden Globe and an SGA nominee, in one day( figurately). I thought about that time when she was on American Idol and how she was bonked off. Supposedly Fantasia was considered for the role of Essie, but she didn't get it. Either way, I would have been proud of the both of them. Who would ever think that her rejection would make her the biggest star? Moe than likely she is far popular than Kelly Clarkson.
