You know, I hadn't seen the trailer that was posted above....I mistook this thread to be about the fat woman talent show that she hosted recently...saw the trailer last night... and yep....it shows 2 stereotypes...african man wanting fat woman...and fat woman (claiming she likes being fat) being attracted to physically in shape male....

It's movies like this that are giving our culture a bad name in my opinion. I understand it's just a comedy movie about "phat" black women, but seriously, this movie has summer trash written all over it. I honestly hope it bombs.

Im Hotep,
I think that it's unfortunate that we glamorize obesity, particularly given the weight problems that Black people in the US have. Our children are dangerously overweight. Will it be cute and phat when one of these women has to have her legs amputated because of diabetes? When they can't sleep at night because they might stop breathing because there is too much fat in their throats? I guess the sequel will be "Phat Girlz in wheelchairz goin' wild on oxygen"

Aryek,
The man in the movie isn't a Nigerian. He's a Hatian portraying a Nigerian Doctor. I haven't seen the movie yet, but my cousin seen. She told me that it was n't all of that.

I saw this film the other night. It was amusing in some places..but so unrealistic! Monique took the 'phat thing' to another level.
Interesting tho, that considering how big she is, she too idealises 'big, strong, muscled men'.. that even the smallest of us rarely get in real life.
The accents used by guys were awful! I'm east african and pretty much can group/know who's who.. couldn't figure what accent the lead guy was comin off with it certainly wasn't nigerian!!
It definely will help (BBW - big black women) feel better about themselves, as film promotes 'acceptance' or 'love' for themselves.

Well, Nigerian or not, the guy is still fine. I still won't be watching that movie, though. I'll just wait until it comes on The Movie Network to see if I can catch a glimpse of him.

Eskay,
That is the one thing I love about Monqiue. I just like her confidence of who she is. I have a strange feeling that she lost weight , she'll love who she is and if she a plus size woman like she currently, she'll love herself no matter what.
I think about people like Starr Jones and all of that weight she lost. I knew that she had some Health issues, but it wasn't connected to weight. Back then, she seemed to have no problem with her weight, that was until she met the pretty boy. Seemingly, she only lost the weight when she married him. I was looking at an interview with Monique commenting of her recent weight loss. She was troubled about it, not so much because she lost weight, but who and what for. You would expect for the press to be all in awe about her weight loss, but they were troubled about one even went as far to ask her " are you doing this for yourself or for your man?" I'm troubled about it myself because she want to look good for her man and not for herself. What would happen if that man dissed her, then what?
Although society thinks that being skinner equates beauty, but not in the case of Starr Jones. I don't know. Ironically, when Starr was bigger, she was very pretty. She looked vibrant, youthful ----a full figured model woman. Now she looked warn out. Her skin looks more dry and she looks older. She just doesn't look right at all. JUst recently, she just got a breast lift and it could have cause her her life. She lost a lof blood and she end up getting a blood transfusion. What bugged me about Starr was when she was big and unattached, she didn't worry about it, but now that she is married to pretty boy, she basically put her life in jeopardy to please her husband. That is not weight lost should be about.

I have to agree with you on that one @ CeeCee. Her confidence is definitely what makes her sooo attractive! If she was any smaller or too small, she just wouldn't look right. One of the things highlighted in the film by the gorgeous nigerian doctor was asking her why she feels she has a need to compete with skinnier girls, when she's gorgeous the way she is (big not fat)..and he said.. you will never be a size 5.. something about her bone structure etc..
for me.. the film wasn't promoting obesity.. it was promoting bigger women, that they are just as attractive, lovable as slimmer women. It brought home just how much the stereo typical images are fed to us via the media..and how no-one fights..
I'm 5'2.. a size 10.. but regardless .. I do know when I look in magazines.. hardly anyone ..if any..represent my frame..I see skinny ass 5'9 beauties that need to be fed! or now it's the plastic beauties that are in with the fake boobs, lip suctioned bellies etc.. I watch that America's Top Next Model programme in fascination ..week to week.. as the people you least expect to have self esteem issues are the ones screaming with them..even with the perfect bodies.

Kenya "The black chick" from America's top model is fine, and she likes to eat. She had a few problems sometimes with not being skinny enough
