Ladi,

I went to see Date Movie. Hmmm, I don't know it's was funny, but at the same it was almost on the borderline of being too silly. However, I do want to see Scary Movie 4. I could be wrong( as when we look at the previews of the movie those are the only funny parts to the movie), but it looks like that it could he a funny movie. It's coming out in April.

Hmmmm.....is it really a good film?

A coalition of community organisations are challenging the anti-African portrayal of African American women in the Fox film ‘Date Movie’

In a campaign invitation sent by Tony Warner, the director of the 100BMOL’s Education through Film programme wrote;

“In two weeks time it will be International Womens Month and we will be screening films that respect the achievements of African women from all over the world. Many women of African descent will have the kind of body shape which is caricatured and objectified in the poster and the film itself. It is clear that the woman’s bottom is [being portrayed as] a major attraction and object of fun if not sexual interest for the viewers. Those of you who [have seen the Saartjie Baartman documentary] will appreciate that this portrayal is part of a history of the sexual objectification of black women.

Last year, the 100BMOL screened a documentary titled Sarah Baartman, the Hottentot Venus to over 450 people. The film revealed how an African woman was ‘imported’ to Britain in 1810 and made to perform and squat in a cage so that Londoners could admire her buttocks and genitalia. The London crowd was particularly interested in the shape and size of her posterior which were seen as both an indication of her “oversexed nature and the inferiority of African women.

The european obsession with the disrespectful sexual objectification of African women goes back centuries

Campaign Details

The campaign calls for complaints to be sent to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and Metro newspaper who published an offensive advert for the film on the Friday 24th February 2006 (page 7).

The film which is distributed/advertised by 20th Century Fox shows the distorted image of an African American woman with a disrespectful emphasis on her rear. This crass sexual objectification is emphasised with the tagline “From wedding planners to wedding crashers, they all get it in the rear!.

To see a slightly different version of the poster visit 20th Centruy fox site. In this version the womans’ behind is made to “vibrate;
http://www.fox.co.uk

If you view the advert as offensive, degrading, or poor taste please take the time to complain to the Advertising Standards Authority which investigates complaints of taste and decency and has upheld similar complaints in the past;
http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/how_to_complain/complaints_form/

Also send an e-mail to The Editor at mail@ukmetro.co.uk stating your views on the imagery

To ask for the Fox “vibrating behind to be removed e-mail visit http://www.fox.co.uk/contact/

African History
Saartjie Baartman (1789-1816)

Saartjie Baartman, a daughter of the Khoi people, was born in the Eastern Cape, Azania (South Africa) in 1789. At one point enslaved, she eventually came to serve a european colonist who introduced her to a British Naval Surgeon, William Dunlop, who in turn had her transported by ship to London in 1810.

Once there she was coereced into being paraded at circuses, museums, bars and universities. Forcibly presented as "a wild beast", Saartjie Baartman was portrayed by europeans as the epitome of African racial inferiority and African female sexuality. She was paraded naked before audiences in both London and Paris for crowds to gaze at her genitals. Her captors disrespectfully labelled her the "Hottentot Venus" a vociferous european linguistic construct which sought to place upon her a kind of super-barbarism, an ultra "negro" savagery.

Repeatedly raped and forced into a life of drink and prostituion Saartjie Baartman was passed from european ‘exhibitor’ to the next until she died, her final years ending in France. After her death, her body was handed to the scientist, Georges Cuvier. With 24 hours he cast her in plaster and then dissected her body, removing the brain, the vulva and the anus, which were placed in glass jars in a preserving fluid. He then removed all flesh from the skeleton. These remains were kept in the exhibition rooms of the French Museums, open for public viewing, until 1974 and 1976. A plaster cast of the corpse of Saartjie Baartman remains on display in the storage of the Museum of Mankind in Paris.

When Azania gained its freedom in 1994, Nelson Mandela as President of the new goverment requested the French government to return the remains of Saartjie Baartman to the land of her birth. Finally on 21 February 2002 the French passed necessary legislation.

Almost 200 years after suffering abuse, hardship and indignity in europe, a box containing Saartjie Baartman's remains, draped in a South African flag and flanked by six Khoisan children, was wheeled into Cape Town airport on Friday 3 May 2002.

Her burial ceremony was on August 9 2002, Women's Day.

Advert as printed in Metro Newspaper

 LIGALI Comment

The european obsession with African women is not new. She is either parodied as a freak in comparison to a eurocentric norm (as above) or portrayed as an exotic untamed sexual predator (also above). From literature and films to music videos and cartoons, she has been mercilessly caricatured by the same group of people who have simultaneously leered, lusted, fantasised, oppressed and in the most abhorrent of cases raped her. Please click the cartoon link and watch ‘Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs’ (sic) and understand that whilst today it is ‘Date Movie’ that passes as entertainment to their adults, yester-year this is also what was presented as entertainment for their children. After that do please something with your anger and disgust.

Act.

It will take less than five minutes to send an email or write a letter of complaint objecting to this disrespectful objectification of African women. Whilst we acknowledge that we ourselves have a duty not to accept roles which forces us to denigrate our culture and heritage, we also have a duty not to support products or companies that choose to exploit or denigrate us for commercial (or political gain). Hit them where it hurts, tell your friends and family to boycott the movie.

They won’t be missing much.
