boyz in the hood was good film...but menace came out after it...and blew it away....
both are classics........later films tried to do a color-by-numbers copy of the films...but only mocked those films .
Menace is an alltime classic film....

| MENACE TO SOCIETY WAS THE BEST AND THE DIALOUGE IN THE FILM WAS HILARIOUS. I'M I THE ONLY ONE THAT FOUND THE DIALOUGE FUNNY. THIS WAS A VERY TRAGIC, EYE OPENING FILM BUT THE DIALOUGE BETWEEN THE CAST HAS ME LAUGHING TO THIS DAY. THE FUNNIEST PART WAS THE VERY BEGINNING , WHEN THEY ARE IN THE KOREAN STORE. HILARIOUS

Both of them are really good.
But Menace II Society was on top. Both were really dramatic, but i remember when watching Boyz in the Hood, it dragged on for a while. Menace to society had more action and in a way woz more comical (proven by 'dont be a menace'). I'll give both directors credit since they were both top class for directoral debuts.

Boys in The Hood KO1 Menace
Seriously, its not even close
One was a poignant, thought provoking look into the lives of boys growing up in the hood
The other was an extended rap video. Infact, G-unit and D-block could remake the film and you wouldnt know the difference

opinions are opinions...but there were nuances between what menace 2 society was about and what "bang bang shot" songs and videos are about....
next time you watch menace.....pay attention to the scenes with charles dutton and samuel jackson.....
no disrespect, but I thought only non black people would maybe not get the point(s) of the film.....and just see shooting and killing....

Is it really a fair comparison, when one of them practically had a blueprint?

Nope I can't choose and I won't choose, I love both films equally. I think the storyline for boyz n tha hood was much deeper though, the good brother getting caught up in the world of the bad brother by mistake. And that was later depicted in Asher D's bullet boy, which when u check it was also quite deep and portrayed very well for an english film. But Larenz Tate, damn that brother is fine and he's acting skills ain't half bad

There is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to opinions about art...I was just voicing my views on some of the things about the film that were more subtle than the violence....
there's footage of the "watts riots" and other civil rights era clashes with police at the beginning when they roll the credits...for example...

"You know you dun f**ked up right? Y'see what I'm sayin'? You dun f**ked, you know that right? Nah...nah I'm sayin'? You know you dun f**ked up, see what I'm sayin'?" LMAOOOOO!!
What about when that nerdy white guy went to see Chauncey and ended up getting punked..."D-d-d-do I stutter muthaf**ka? D-d-do I stutter muthaf**ka? What you too scared to come round here at night muthaf**ka? But you ain't too scared to have a black man steal for ya funky ass is you?" Bwahahahahahaha!!
The whole film is just classic from beginning to end....way better than Boyz in Da Hood!

| Menace, menace, menace! But that's not to say that "Boyz N Da Hood" is not a great film because it's a classic in it's own right.

seen seen, i like boyz n da hood and menace 2 soceity as two of my favourite films, but the way i c them is that both films were made for different audiences.
boyz n da hood it could be said can be watched by both black people and other races and will be appreciated, but menace 2 soceity was more raw, on a lower budget and you know was only aimed for the black audience - how do you know? - well you havent got that predictable nice ending that you got in boyz n da hood.
put simply menace 2 soceity is a film for the hood by the hood, it was raw and thats why it wins hands down.

| What about the movie "South Central" with Glenn Plummer from '92? It's the story of a recently released prison inmate/ex-gangbanger who's struggling to keep his 10 year old son away from the gang life. Great movie, too bad it's so underrated.

Both were unrealistic (Boyz n The Hood- who the hell takes a person who has just been shot up TO THEIR HOUSE AND LAYS THEM ON THE COUCH?? I mean, COME ON.) and neither offered any intelligent solutions for any of the problems that they were supposedly addressing. Yes, Tre' went to college in Boyz n The Hood but that really is a Eurocentric "solution" that leaves anyone with half a brain saying, "Ok, go to college. Now what?" As for Menace, "N****rN****rN****rN****rN****r" -wow, that's really inspiring.
I recommend The Boys of Baraka, which you can find on DVD at Amazon. Let's deal with SOLUTIONS instead of acting like dangerous coons for the cameras.
