I saw this last time I was across the pond.I would recommend it.It's at once.... triumphant, awesome, inspiring, informative and also depressing and you will leave the theatre thinking you are not nearly fit enough.

I heard great things about this film, gonna check it at Peckham

Would have preferred the director to be somebody else though, but hey what can you do?

Absolutely brilliant film Jettblack.  I had meaning to see it for AGES.  So glad I did.  That African spirit coming out and manifesting itself in the new generation... amazing.

I agree that the film was indeed excellent and in many ways a very 'hope inspiring' one.  Still, there are aspects about the direction the 'initiative' (started by the 'Clowns' to combat the decline into gang culture) could go, which concern me.

I also wondered how many of the people who follow that dance form, undstand and appreciate it's 'spiritual' links to our wider African culture and heritage, as opposed to seeing it as simply another 'entertainment' form.  I am particularly concerned that the 'competitive' aspects of the dance forms don't go down a path similar to the one hip hop culture did with the whole East v West thing.

Like I said, there is much to be positive about in this film, but I am just a little nervous that the direction things like this take, can end up being a move far away from the philosophy which embodied their creation in the first place.

Mind you the sheer physical demands of the dance routines made me feel that my 'Best Maypole dancer 2003' award means diddle squat.

Respect

In that case it's best to listen to the testimony of the kids involved themselves.  You saw how seriously they take it.  They mentioned several times how spiritual the dancing is to them and where it takes them, did you not see when the one young girl nearly passed out and they carried her gently away saying "that was the point"...  They discovering their own spirituality.  Yes it's linked to africa but in no way derivative and therefore not a copy or nor should they attept to.  It's their own and you have to listen to them speak on it.  All the parents and pastors and everybody was behind it talking about the spirituality.

As for the fighting thing, I don't think so.  "As one of them said, it make look aggressive but fighting is the last thing on anybodys mind"

My worry was the white dude at the end.  He symbolised the danger of looming commericalism possibly destroying what those kids have.

I'm glad you got to see it DM,did you rent it or is still in general release, ive only got one other UK friend to see it so far and she was blown away.

I guess it's one of those word of mouth films over here.

What you mentioned is the thing which struck me most DM,no matter how many generations removed our roots cannot hide, they can never be squashed and when we claim them the results are awesome!
