Dtothe, I usually check it out every year.  I think I caught a few (4?) last year.  Unfortunately, I don't remember any titles--but they were all quite powerful.  The organizers always do a great job in selecting--I'd say you can't go wrong.

I don't remember titles, but I remember some of the storylines from last year.  I remember that one was a love story based in West Africa.  Another was about Black Women and Sexuality.  Another was on Sweet Honey In the Rock.  The last chronicled the lives of some brothers imprisoned in Louisiana (which should be even more poignant this year considering the circumstances in the Gulf States).

Thanks Mwema,....I get the poster(listings) each year..so I'm aware of the titles you mentioned....

the last one was about Angola state prison ...in Louisiana....and you're right....recent events make the film strangley more relevant now.

I always try to spread info about the festival.....because there are alternatives to hollywood..but people just don't seem interested in seeking them out sometimes.

Cool.  I'm glad you'll be going.  It should be a lot of fun returning to the thread and comparing notes.

Angola actually wouldn't let him in to shoot, so he shot at some other local institutions.  It was very deep, especially many of the comments coming from the then Louisiana governor.  The actual naming of the companies that are not only succeeding but booming due to the 'big business' of prison (majority Black bodies) was...dang, made me almost lose it.   It is not that we don't know this but there was something just...just...killing me loudly as I heard those many names being rattled off.  Dtothe, I "talked" so much, I just remembered the name of that film...http://www.prisonballthemovie.com

Hey D,

Did you have a chance to catch any of it this year?  I caught a few--can't remember any of the titles right now.  Great as always.  If you didn't have a chance to catch any of it, I received an e-mail that they are showing a few in Jersey this weekend.  The only thing I can remember off hand is that it is at the Jersey City Museum of Art (Montgomery Street??) this weekend.  Let me know if you want me to post details and I'll dig it up.

thanks for the follow up MwemaJ.

i got the mailing also....they are showing the one about how the Belgians terrorized and enslaved Africans in the name of colonization...White King, Red Rubber, Black Death.

I think I may head out for that one...not often they show stuff in Jersey like that.

I missed the entire one in new york this year....

so if you have any reviews, comments, etc.I'd apreciate them..

Yeah, White King, Red Rubber, Black Death--that's the one that the Belgian government tried to ban.  I haven't had a chance to see it yet, unfortunately.

I saw Aces/The Dutchman (were shown together), Smart Black People, Yesterday, and the Miracle of Candeal.  I also purchased Kirikou and have seen twice since, watched it with two of my nephews.  The turnout at the Festival seemed lower this year, not sure why--outreach?  All were quite good, each very different from the next--not sure where to start to share where I wouldn't be talking about them forever.  I will come back later and post, though.

The ADFF will be here in Brooklyn in February, as they do each year.  I'll be excited to catch a few more.

Let me know how White, Red and Black goes--the venue, the turnout, the reception, any panel discussion after, etc.

Peace

thanks for the report....MwemaJ

I'm always shocked by the less than standing room only turnout..especially being in such a large metro area with so many Black people.....NY,NJ,CT

I turned my back on mainstream pop culture(movies,music)..a few years ago....I wonder when other people will make the same logical decision...there IS an alternative...

Not on the topic of film but if you haven't already--don't forget to check out the Slavery in the New York exhibit at the New York Historical Society.

Peace

Slavery in New York
October 7, 2005 through March 26, 2006
The New-York Historical Society is embarking on a two-year initiative on slavery and New York. The first phase of the exhibition, titled "Slavery in New York" opened on October 7, 2005. Through two major exhibitions, public programs, walking tours, educational materials and programs for school, college, and adult learners, N-YHS will explore the vital role that slave trading, the labor of enslaved people, and important commerce with slave societies in the 19th century played in making New York the wealthiest city in the world.

Further details of this important exhibition can be found at:  http://www.slaveryinnewyork.org
