| it's about the life (survival) of black people held down by france in the sugar cane plantations in martinique, (some proud and some ashamed to be black)....a grandmother determined to get the grandson from there to school....THE WISE OLD MAN TELLING THE KID ABOUT AFRICA AND ABOUT LIFE IS THE DEEPEST THING MAN HAS EVER SEEN IN A MOVIE....it's in french but it have subtitles in english, still worth it...BROTHERS AND SISTERS HAVE TO SEE THIS ONE

Rue Cases Nègres/Sugar Cane Alley is a sweet sad film. It was one of the many films I had to watch this year for my degree.
It is a long film and I felt like I was watching a documentary about the life of a young boy born to those working on the sugar plantations in Martinique-rather than a film.
The children are cute and very funny, but my favourite character was José (the protagonist) and the little old man who was so proud of his ancestors and where he came from.
It was also interesting to watch how the white father of the mixed race boy despised his son playing with other Black people/children and yet the mother of his son was black-and how she too despised him playing with children darker than he was. Also the reasons why the white fathers of mixed race children refused to allow their mixed race child to carry their name.
It was also interesting to see colonialism outside of an American perspective.

i love the teacher telling the children to write in their notebooks and to read everyday the phrase : EDUCATION IS THE SECOND KEY TO OUR FREEDOM, of course the education at that time was (even now) alienating us against our own race but the guy make a point (we not completely free)...
now the wise old man saying how slavery ended and say NOTHING HAS CHANGED: THE MASTER IS BECOME THE BOSS, i was like: true word!
