I and many others have notice that many black movies have been about the same thing: gangstas, pimps, hoes, hoochies, drugs, the "hood" and just plain old dumb minstrel comedies.

As you know there aren't that many varieties when it comes to mainstream black movies.  Most so called "good black movies" are usually comedies that poke fun at black stereotypes that reinforces racist feelings towards blacks.

I would love to see a African kingdom epic movie where you see a black man as a heroic character.  I also would like to see a black woman in a role where she is the queen or goddess of something.

So what would be your ideas of a great black oriented movie?

A good Black movie would be one that does not poke fun at Blacks, not a comedy, one that enlist the talents of some of the good Black actors/actresses of there and definite does not include any rappers/singer. Rappers/singers should stick to what they do best. That is a start.

MY BIG FAT AFRICAN WEDDING.

African boy weds african American girl... The film would highlight all the similarities, embrace all the differences between the cultures AND hopefully lay to rest all the shyt that keeps cropping up on sites like this.

That's the same thing I expressed a few months ago on a thread I started about African filmmakers. We see the greatness in the history of other people portrayed in cinema, but the best we can do is the same old b.s. like the ones you've described. :X It seems like the closest we've ever got to seeing African royalty on the big screen is Coming to America lol.

I would like to see a thriller/mystery where there is some known conspiracy to overthrow an African Kingdom and a chief is sent by the King and Queen to investigate. Then along the waythe chief meets a woman from a neighbouring village whom he falls in love with and together they help unravel the corrupt plot instigated by a few power hungry officials within the kingdom.  If I made such a flick it would have it all - martial arts, philosophers, comedy, mystery, love, tragedy, etc. Basically it would be a good three and a half hour flick like the old days. It would be a mix of African talent both from the continent itself and abroad. You know Angela Basset would have to be Queen!

I should have been a filmmaker myself......

@PH

Who would the king be and you know Denzel would have to have a major part because no dispute over his acting ability and I would love the film to have a mixture of all black actors globally. Oh yeah and it got to have my guy Djimon Hounsou in it or there will be no film period LOL.

bbc,

Something that is , like you said, is far different than the Boyz in the hood-like movies or comedies. But I wish that Hollywood would acknowlegde and accept serious Black minds because if so, we would probabaly be seeing different movies than what we are seeing. Overall, my idea Black movies would be a documentary about AA culture far as the positive truth about us, Black dramas, black romance etc, but anything that doesn't deal with thuggery and comedies.

Blackpresident,

Hmmmm...not a bad idea. I think the last time you heard of AA( and maybe I'm wrong as I do not watch TV that often) and American relationships being displayed on cinema was with " A Raisin In The Sun".

I would love a black murder mystery

Also, would like to see a black themed franchise movie, comic book, etc

And a comedy set in a HBCU - without the toliet humour or N****r jokes- would be nice to see

But these need to be T V shows before they could make films

CeeCee,

I'm sure you could watch TV 24-7 and you'd still wouldn't be any closer to finding your answer. lol I know there's been a few stage plays which cover such relationships. Perhps these could be converted into a film. (In fact I sure A raisin in the sun was adapted for for broadway...

Years ago there was a British sitcom called 'Mixed Blessing' but this dealt  with a White British and Black Carrib relationship... I think it might be cool to see something similar but a marriage between two black families.

A movie that simply was based in a naturally black-populated area with other socially relevant people.  What black person doesn't know a white person?  It's silly to go to the other extreme simply because you can have a vehicle that is favourable to your race.

The story would not be about their race, but would feature well-rounded characters that you could say 'I actually know someone like that'.. There would be bad and good, no Cosbyism and no ghettoism.  Wow, sounds like real life, a bit film-noir!

Wow all you got some REALLY good ideas.  Ya'll got some ideas that didn't even cross my mind.

One of my favorite ideas is the one about the BIG FAT AFRICAN wedding and a documentary about AA culture, if there was going to be a documentary about us, I would like to see some of the following included in it:  historical black colleges like someone said, other music besides rap, like jazz, rock and roll, blues, I would also like to see the variation of black american culture, like the creoles and stuff like that.

I want to become a filmmaker now. lol

I would like to see a black whodunit' .. The whodunit' type of films either have all white casts or are comeidic spoofs like Clue or Murder by Death... That would be cool; ten people stuck in a big mansion over night and somebody winds up dead , everybodys a suspect, trust no one .... I could see Sam Jackson, Terrance Howard, Angela Basset, that white guy that played the skin-head in Higher Learning, Vivica Fox,the lady that played Tyreese's girlfriend in Baby Boy,Chris Tucker,Selma Hyak, Ice Cube, and the sister from Twentyeight Days Later ... One hell of cast ,very diverse ; but still enough blacks to be considerd a black film but something all races could relate to... That would be good film ; I should write the screenplay..LOL

I would love to see a really good horror movie with a black cast.  I don't think I ever saw a really scary horror movie with mostly blacks in it like other genres.  I'll like to see a supernatural, living dead sort of thing.

A West African cop comes to America to investigate the murder of a promient, well loved, and revolutionary African leader who nation is rich in oil,he is killed by American black gangsters for unknown reasons.(The African leader was scheduled to speak before the United Nations).
The brother from Africa is forced to team up with a Black American brother from the F.B.I.The murder of the African leader appears to be deeper than mere politics and suggests that some other power is controlling the black gangsters.

The two strong, handsome, and intelligent black men have to find out who killed the popular and well loved African leader and who is behind his assassination.By working together the men have differences of opinion on how to handle the case.

In between dodging the black gangsters. They have to contend with African mercenaries...a sinister oil company....rogue Black Ops agents....and a beautiful West African woman who may or may not be on their side....Both black men find out that although five thousand miles of water and five hundred years of slavery may seperate them...they have a lot in common....The actors to play the parts?....Denzel Washington or Wesley Snipes as the American cop and Djimon Hounsou as the West African brother...Pass the popcorn!!(laugh).

P.S:
I am thinking about writing such a novel based on this premise.Anyone out there get slick and try to beat me to it.....See you in court!!(laugh).

that's a brilliant plot but i guess in the end if it all comes down to money, your jewish producers will exchange the black afro-american cop and put in a white guy like Colin Farell and the black woman might lose her color and be portrayed by Nicole Kidman who falls in love with the white cop....of course she would be a longtime friend of the African cop, maybe his "sister"....her family once adopted the poor black boy whose family was killed by rebels or the government..So the "white African" Nicole who is OF COURSE from Zimbabwe is the only person that our African cop can trust in the US...a true blockbuster

so make sure you don't have to negotiate the financial side with non-black people...

HUSK.....I  totally agree on your viewpoints.....The script would be whitewashed to appeal to the white majority. That is the reason why i may just go ahead with the novel first...as for negotiations....well by the time i am done writing it,maybe there will be a strong black film production company out there who won't take any s**t!(laugh).

Then the producer will insist you put in a rapper in a supporting role so the "urban" kids will come to see it.

That's why I think that blacks should have their own production industry like the whites got Hollywood, Indians got Bollywood, and even Latinos I think have their own production industries to help support movies that target their ethnicities.  Otherwise, blacks aren't going to get anywhere in the movie production industry.

1. A film focusing on a particular family who lived in Brixton, and played a major role during the Brixton Riots.

2. A film focused on the Biafra War

3. The Rise to prominenece of Nelson Mandela.

4. Maybe a film focusing on the struggles that the first wave of black people who immigrated to UK had to go through (like a film version of the book The Lonely Londoners).

5. A film  about two  best freinds, a boy and a girl, who grew up together, went to the same primary school, attended the same college, and both had ambitions of being a alwyer, and being true to themselves no matter what. They then attend different universities and law schools. They see each other a few years later after losing touch. They are both barristers, but one has  become a stuck up, upper class snobbish, artistocartic conservative type, whilst the other is still successful whilst still staying true to herself. They now mingle in different crowds of people, and soon they have to clash in court as the snobbish character is defending a well known gang member  who he knows committed the crime (assult) but is willing to take on the culprits case because of the amount of cash he is paying him, and the other friend is representing the victim (who now can't walk). Though they battle each other in the court. Their friendship is tested when the gang member starts sending threats to the opposing barrister, WILL THE DEFENDANTS BARRISTER DO NOTHING OR NOT.

I KNOW ITS A LITTLE SKETCHY RIGHT NOW BUT I ONLY THOUGHT OF THIS A MINUTES AGO

================

You hinted on it right there.  A full scale production of a true Black or African epic in theatres...

*The valiant battles of a particular precolonial African country against Arabs or Europeans in the midst of Arab or European slave-raiding and kidnapping in Africa staged sometime between 700-1600 CE.

*The Moor conquest of Europe.

*The Queens Kandakes (Candices) of Ethiopia & Nubia in their successful military campaigns in stopping the mighty Roman army from conquering Upper Egypt and from penetrating further into Africa.

*Pharaoh Twtmos III in being the first ruler to conquer all or most of the known world (to Whites).  He was the first to conquer all the land between the Nile to the Euphrates rivers, where his territory even branched into most of known Europe and northwest Asia.  His military campaigns were during the 15 century BCE and had the famous mother Queen Hapshepsut.

*The West African voyage, in collaboration with their Egyptian brethren, across the Atlantic to the Americas as early as 1500 BCE which spawn the Olmec civilization.

*Hannibal's military campaign which uprooted Roman soldiers in northern African (Carthage) where he used a fleet of elephants.

*The first Chinese (Black) dynasties and their battles to consolidate power in ancient China.

*The life of (I think) Pharaoh Twtmos IV where he defends Egypt from 200,000 consolidated troops from a number of Asiatic, Indo-European, & Semitic countries as noted in  African Origin of Civilization by Chiekh Anta Diop.

*The settlement of ancient India by Ethiopians which reflects on their present gods and religion, before being distorted by the Aryan invasion that resulted in the Hindu religion.

Overall, Black film makers are doing a terrible job of creating epics, while Whites often show distorted realities about themselves in history and turn them into epics.  We have so much to offer in history, but it is sad our Black film makers are too ignorant to show who we really are.

Epics are out of the question

Gladiator: 103,000,000    (hit)

Troy: 185,000,000           (big time flop)

Alexander: 150,000,000 ( Big time flop)

Trust me thoth, it aint ignorance, from black filmakers its a distinct and very clear lack of paper to fund such epics which are not guaranteed to make returns.

====================

I disagree.  Blacks cannot measure such things with a white stick.  All of the current epics are about White people.  Even Asians (Chinese & Japanese) are making good epics about their culture.  An epic of a real African culture is almost a new concept...something Blacks never see, therefore I think many would go see a good one.
