I was reading an interview of Thandie Newton.
She was talking about a scene where a white cop pulls over her and her husband in their nice car. They are a well off black couple. The policeman violates her in an overintimate body search on road and degrades her while her husband stands by. She talked about how her character grows to resent and hate her husband "he became impotent in her eyes".
I thought that was a classic metaphor for slavery and black male/female relationships in the diaspora... Very sad, but quite powerful if one looks at it that way.

I agree. Overall, the movie didn't leave up to the hype IMO. I enjoyed and could relate to certain aspects of the film but I expected so much more. Others I know feel the same.

| Saw it a few months ago. Critics absolutely loved it. I liked it. But I was expecting a bit more because they made such a big deal about it. Had some good lessons in it and spoke the truth...the two different scenes with Thandie Newton and that white guy from Wild Things spoke volumes same with the one with the Persian man and the Latino...but I won't spoil it for you if you plan on seeing it.

I'm with you. It's doesn't live up to the hype although there are some good portions.

A great flick that really touches on preconceived notions that alot of us have here in the US!

This film is plain wack. Just your usual run of the mill flick that's no better than those straight-to-TV dramas that come on UK Gold.
From the way everyone was going on about it I was expecting something a lot more hard hitting with some REAL racist talk like the dinner table scenes in American History X and Jungle Fever for example. Instead it was just some overblown, cliched and cheesy ass flick that was full of stereotypical and one dimensional characters. Not to mention downright BORING!
Just wait til it comes out on dvd. Better yet, until it comes on tv in a few years time because I wouldn't pay to see that sh*t again.

@Prince Hakeem:
I felt the same as you, I didn't think that it was all that...
I was fairly disappointed... not bad for a small budget, but over-hyped...

I just got back from seeing it and I thought it was really good, one scene literally aged me by about 5 years, for those of you that have seen it,its the one with Terrence Howard,Ludacris and Ryan Phillipe.
I liked it coz it was so multi-layered and you had to constantly pull the strands together, some of it was fairly predictable but there are bits which are definate talking points, things which irritate me greatly but even so I still think its good.

@Jett Black
I know the scene you mean...
I was like WTF?
I guess that incident made what Ryan Phillipe's character inevitably did all the more shocking...
I don't know...
I just found it hard to be moved by the film...
It was good in parts... but, I guess I would have liked it more without the hype that surrounded it...
it felt like when I saw Lord of the rings... a huge anticlimax...

I went to see the film, and I though it was pretty good thought provoking flick. Anyway, both my friend and I were a little bit confused with the Thandie Newton and Terrance Newton scene when they were stopped by the redneck cop played by Matt Dillion. We were pretty sure she refered to herself as a "White Woman" with a black husband when challenging Matt Dillion for pulling them over. Perhaps it was just me and my friend, did anyone else pick up on it?? or may be we misunderstood

Just seen the film, I thought it was pretty good... one of my fav film for the year so far.....
I guess it shows more about different people with different mindsent and agenda in life somehow coincide with each other, things that we know of course, but it was well put together....
Some good points raised there and I think should be discussed, but I don't think the film is really meant to go in depth with the racial issue nor the background of the characters....
Good film..........

I agree.
As for it ''tackling racism'' well it lets us know that EVERYBODY is racist because of some preconceived ideas they have of others that are different...
Oh and the only characters that get to 'redeem' themselves somewhat are the white ones.
Not impressed.
In fact the film pissed me off

i saw it last thursday and actually thought it was quite different which is a good thing. The way the characters were subtley connected was interestin even if it caused da viewer to suspend their belief.
U could say that Thandie's husband did kinda redeem himself though because of the way he reacted the second time he was stopped by the police and when he stopped his 'yes sir' 'no sir' attitude. In my opinion he did learn something from the incident with his wife. And when his wife was rescued by da white officer she didnt even say thank you and left him in da cold.
I liked da part bout the cuban man and his daughter and da impermeble cloak (actually made me tear up). Maybe im just a sucker for these kinda films...

Yes, firstly by beating up a Black guy (not that I had sympathy for Ludacris but Thandie's husband only reacted and hit out at a Black man FIRST) and then by being aggressive-not to mention he was in posession of a gun as if this somehow empowered him because he truly had no other source/form of power.
The white racist cop was able to redeem himself by saving the life of somebody-and that shot of him with the smoke and fire engine in the background could have been ripped from any movie about ''9/11'' kmt!

I didn't like it that much, don't believe the hype. I hated Ludacris's character and I love that man. I hated the way Matt Dillon saved Thandie Newton (the great white hope), I hated the way they encouraged you to laugh at chinese people.
I get what they tried to do with the film, I just didn't like it.

i felt insulted that film seemed liked they were talking to some ten year olds. i mean what are odds of all things and poeple meeting eacth othe like that, just seemed stupid to me, it started good at first but became silly at the end. that seen where lorenzo tate, was killed was just stupid, what are the odds of someone dying like that or a white dude picking up a black boy at night i mean common now the argument in the car looked juvinile. the part were sandra bullock huged her house maid and said your are my best friend looked silly ,yeah right like that gonna really happen.
damn lol

I thought it was ok.
Its one of those films that will have you thinking about it days , even weeks after you see it.
All of the cast had issues.
I feel they should call the film America cause the way I see it the film was about RACE in America & the way different races are percived.
Even though the cop was a racist pig you could see why he was the way he was. More out of fear & anger about his dad.
The way the black cheif of police felt he had to ignore racism in the force because it is so rife in |
