Before I start I want to mention that this weekend I watched a film called "Man on Fire." Denzel Washington has the lead role, as an self-tormented alcoholic bodyguard hired to protect a little girl from contra-kidnappers.
If you haven't seen this film, you should. Denzel WHUPS AZZ BIG TIME! And does it with passion, as the good guy who goes completely bad.
That movie didn't do well (at least not here in the States). I had no idea it was ever made, nor do I know exactly when it was released. Strange because it is an excellent film IMHO.
The point. Oh, yeah. Oscars. Let me start from the last Black Oscar winner, Jamie Fox, for his role as Ray Charles, in "Ray". Great movie, great acting, and it is pretty clear that denying Jamie Fox an Oscar for his performance as one of the greatest Black music legends in history, is simply opening a can of whup ass on Hollywood, the film industry, and pretty much white America, if Black filk git mad enough about it.
So there's nothing wrong there. Now let's back up, and I'll stop at Denzel Washington and let you folks pick up from there. It seems as though Black actors are being rewarded for good acting in bad roles-that is, not for their talent, but for playing the role itself. Per example:
"Monster's Ball".We all know that Halle Berry's Oscar was awarded primarily for her sex scene with Billy Bob Thornton, in other words, a Black Woman getting her back blown out by a white boy, something every white man who runs Hollywood would probably love to do themselves. That scene is SO notorious that it's been spliced out of the entire film and shared as a porno clip!
Now-Denzel. This is interesting. "Training Day."A dirty black cop doing business with Russian mobsters who in the end by the way gets toasted to hell by the same Russian mobsters. Now let's see, not only does he play a dirty cop, he is a thief, a womanizer, a drug dealer, a thug gangster, a backstabber, and of course, a murdereriIN short, the least likable Black man anyone would like to meet.
Personally I didn't find the film all that great, and Denzel's acting was mediorce in fact, compared to many other roles; John Q ; Crimson Tide ; Malcolm X (Which he practically did for free!)
And everybody loved it. So much, that Denzel gets an Oscar! Wonderful isn't it? Aren't we proud o this brotha for winning the white man's prize? This man has had five, count % Oscar nominations, and received NOTHING until he took a role as a piece of sh*t LAPD police officer which Black folks HATE anyway. So they put a Black face on something Black folks hate-the police. Nice.
I'm looking at the bus and see this new show called "Everybody Hates Chris."
Chris happens to be a little black boy. So it's okay to love Raymond, but hate little Black boys. WTF!!!
What meakes me mad is that a lot of us are either okay with, or just can't or don't wish to see this level of subliminal racism right in our faces. Like the Nike ad about nine years ago. Remember that? Of course we don't because we were too busy waiting on the damned checkout line at Modell's.
Anyway I'm wondering how the rest of you feel about this sort of thing...
