I think it previews today and opens on Friday. Should be interesting from what I'm hearing. Think Terrence Howard is a good actor and the supporting cast as well. I'll prolly wait for the video anywho.

When I saw the commercials for this movie, I assumed that it was gonna be a textbook case of white media manipulation of the black image.
I thought to myself "that is probably the most ignorant movie ever made", it has all the elements of something degrading:
A Pimp
Crunk Music
A white prostitute
I vowed I would never ever see see it.
Well they always say "never say never"
A friend of mine had the ghetto pre-release, So I watched it.
And I gotta say it might now be one of my favorite movies.
It surprised the hell out me, It does not glamourize the pimp life or the music industry. It's tells the tale of a man coming to grips with and trying to change the cesspool his life has become. The acting from everyone, (including Ludacris) is superb.
That being said, as a somewhat paranoid black man some of the images, especially the ending, still did not sit well with me.
But overall it's a good movie, it re-taught me the lesson about judging a book by it's cover.

I'll probably wait and rent it later, but am hearing much of what you said about this movie. All the reviews I've seen give it a thumbs up. Terrence Howard initially had a problem with playing the role and tried to get Larenz Tate for his part. There's a lot of buzz over fine performances and the storyline.

A cracker tells a story about black pimp turning into a rapper? I mean how is this valid on any level, since it was written by a cracker. That's like a hood N****r writing a script about what happens in the country club. Come on man!

As much I LOATHE to admit even though it was written by a white man it is still a good movie.
I get consolation from the fact that john singleton pulled a mel gibson and made it himself, so the majority of the profits go to him.

The sad part about it is that a lot of the movie parts are dead on.
Take the impala he is cruising around in with the rims. Notice the miscolored panel? That's how some people ride here. Still have not figured that one out.
Back on the impala again, thug car of choice here. Can out run a police car, some have stolen police interceptor motors in them to out run the regular police car. Even better it has a trun big enough to store a body, your speakers and a spare tire.
pimping? Aint dead and for some reason a lot of pimps here have white girls and not the fat white girls
The perm for men will not die for some reason. No matter how hard you try to kill it
The memphis rap scene? It is crunk, but if you ever notice, our crunk has more animosity in it than crunk music coming out of other cities. True other cities talk about doing this and that , but look at the titles coming out of this city, "Tear da Club up", "Whoop that trick", "Put yo signs in his face", I could go on and on, but this city just seems to have more black anger in its music than anything else.
I could see how Brewster wrote it because a lot of upper middle class white kids used to go to school with kids who stayed in the projects. So he probably got to know a lot of these kids who were on the road to crime as he was on the road to being a screen writer. Before they rezoned a lot of the school districts here, I could see how he wrote this story.

| @Safetyblitz...guess you had to check it cause it was filmed in Memphis and one of the actresses is from there also. I'm originally from Memphis, and the majority of my relatives of still there. Only a few of us ventured away...and stayed away. Most of the pimps in NY are white men and women. They set up pads near business districts and out in the suburbs...and work that game. Some of the major ones have recently been busted and awaiting trial now.

LOL the same thing happened here last year, except this white dude had a sex club. Which I think they dropped the charges because it is not illegal to charge club fees to belong to a club of people who have sex with each other. ROFL I was man this guy is pimpin everyone and the gov't.

They are very adept when it comes to settling up illegal operations. But we are a tendency to do everything out in the open...guess discretion is the word. So the guys are still wearing that "process" in Memphis, huh?

Hold up folks. Okay, screenplay written and film direction by a white guy. Okay. BUT
remember that John Singleton is one of two PRODUCERS. That implies that Craig Brewer merely put to paper and on film what essentially came out of John Singleton's head.
It's like Steven Spielberg directing Color Purple-But it was writtenby Alice Walker, a Black woman.
Any way you cut it thogh, HUSTLE AND FLOW is DAMNED GOOD MOVIE.

I don't even want to see this movie. I am sick and tired of "life of crime" being glorified with hopes and dreams to become some time of star. It is ok every once in a while, but there is a tidal wave of these types of messages that measure success by deeds that ultimately yields to zero progress collectively for us as a people in the end.
Other groups of people (White, East Asian, etc.) highlight the rewards of intelligence in their films...even the ones that are mostly about action, suspense, or things just blowing up half of the time. But when my brothaz make a film, too often we find little-to-no emphasis on intelligence. This is instead of making it somehow as a borderline-intellectual rapper, singer, actor, writer, or comedian.
Am I the only person that recognizes this as an alarming message to the Black/African movie-going youth?

Yep but a lot of them have removable grills (gold teeth liners almost like tooth covers)
Many people here have gold teeth. Once they make it in the hood a lot of these guys do get gold teeth, some guys get them permanently capped on their teeth with diamonds and all.
It is not just a dominant thing here, but you see enough people with them in there mouths that you do not notice them after a while.
ON another note, a friend of mine used to call me a gold tooth magnet because every woman I attracted had to smile and show me their gold teeth LOL
People with gold teeth never seem to smile, open their mouths and press their lips to expose their teeth.
