Rwanda movie takes issues prize
Don Cheadle was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Hotel RwandaThe screenwriters behind the Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda have been awarded the Humanitas Prize.
Belfast-born Terry George and Keir Pearson, shortlisted at this year's Academy Awards, received $25,000 (£14,000) at the Los Angeles ceremony.
The Humanitas Prize is given annually to TV shows and films that explore meaningful social issues.
Hotel Rwanda relates how a hotel manager saved more than 1,200 refugees during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Terry George's previous films include In the Name of the Father
"Everyone knew what was happening at the time, but all the great leaders of the West did nothing," said Pearson, referring to the Rwandan genocide.
"This film was about an ordinary man, a hotel manager, who did do something and did something great."
The Humanitas organisation seeks to honour TV dramas, comedies and feature films that "entertain and enrich the viewing public".
Previous recipients of the feature film prize include Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for Good Will Hunting, and Tim Robbins for Dead Man Walking.
