| Just seen a trailer on TV for War of the Worlds, looks breath taking, releasing 1st July any one seen it on Pirate yet, and is it a remake? If so what was the original like and does it warrant a remake

The original was a radio broadcast which at the time (very long ago) people took as literal truth!!!
Orson Welles was reading it out as a radio drama but the people of the time thought it was a live newscast LOL... they was mass panic and rioting in the streets as people thought that the Martians invaded.
I KID YOU NOT!! This is all true!
The movie that was made is monochrome, Ive seen it and it is ok (if you can stand black and white B movies LOL).
This new one SHOULD be good.

its actually based on a book written by HG Wells in 1898.
the Orson Welles Mercury Theatre Production was based on that.

it will definately be the blockbuster of 2005. beating star wars revenge of the sith, fantastic four and batman returns. no doubt.
tom cruise may be a average actor (very succesful mind), but with his star quality and steven spielbergs imagination and direction, the film will be a smash hit. an instant classic. like most spielberg films.
i am looking forward to it.

Yes. War of the world is a remake---as a matter of fact it has been remade twice. One was made in the 50's and one in recent years, I think about 6yrs ago or less. I liked the remake, but if you want to be spooked, believe it or not, the version from the 1950's is the scariest --to me at least! I once seen this at midnight--on public TV.Although things weren't as modern( far as special effects) as they are today, nonetheless it was downright spooky! It seemed sooo serious! There were no humor. When the characters were scared in the movie you were just as scared as they were. For picture to be made from that era, the dramatics was great because you felt what the characters felt--scared! I may watch WOW 2 and maybe three depending if it isn't that scary ,but I will promise you, I will NEVER watch WOW 1 at night and barely the day.

We'll see. Minority Report actually wasn't that bad either so you've convinced me to take my girl out to this. Batman Begins on the other hand looks like the one that will be shaking down the bow-office.

False advertising. This was not a war, it was a slaughter. Just scene after scene of people running around being blown up over and over again.
The aliens blow sh*t up, people run around and die, the aliens die because of bacteria and that's it. Movie done.

Most depressing science fiction/spielberg movie/blockbuster I have yet see. Depressing on several counts. First, its so anti-black; anti arab, pro white; pro white america it beggars belief. The aliens or tripods are designed to look like arabs; there are no black ppl in that world, but the aliens limbs, complexion are definitely non-white (and not even green). Secondly, the analogy with 9-11 is so clumsy, unsubtle and heavy handed it just laffable. The aliens have been "watching earth full of envy" and they have been "planted here" ad nauseum. Cruise is presented as the kind of American son of the soil..working class hero, pacifist, liberal, resaonable..who must protect the blonde daughter and gung ho son on the home front. Really, this is racist rambo-esque sentimentality written by the liberal fascist elite.
Another reason for being depressed is the simplistic presentation of what is a science fiction cliche. THere is no credible explanation of who they aliens are or what they want - surely HG wells could be updated for a cynical, knowing and film educated audience? So all we have is a monotonous bodycount, no drama and a really crap ending.
Finally and maybe more depressing is the decline of steven spielberg's talent. During the last few years this master film maker has churned out such rubbish - and always starring Tom Cruise!- it cant be long before the critics declared him a spent force.
4 stars out of ten. An ugly, dark, depressing, racist, fraudulent waste of a film.

Saw the movie Wednesday, The premise was good but I expected better. The notion of being taken by surprise is scary though, some metaphor for Arab invaders (Sleeper cells) is my guess. There is a British Director who made his version of the Classic. It is suppose to drop in September, I hope he does a better job.

Just saw the movie tonight..Some of the best special effects i've seen/heard...It wasn't horrible for todays movie standards...But I think Star wars and Batman Begins were better....I think alot you guys expectations were too high...

I for the life of me can't figure how you got all this out of a sci-fi flick about aliens. Your mind must run a mile a minute..The aliens didnt even resemble humans, let alone arabs

Not only do I hold an A Level in Film Studies ( LOL) but I suppose I pay particular attention to the underlying assumptions in films like that. BTW I am not sure if you understand how symbols work..they dont have to literally resemble someting they refer to e.g bowls are generally used to symbolise woman and/or fertitility..but in light of 9/11 America's paranoia about terrorism/ Iraq/Palestine/ nationality aliens...I can only infer that alien ships (my mistake I know I should have emphasized ships in my post) with long spindly legs which in aspect looks like flowing robes and cockpits which look like the stereotypical physiogomy of a storybook arabic villain...you get the picture!
Actually impact I am surprised that you didnt read that out of the film..its so obvious.

Saw movie this afternoon.
I didn't care much for the story line, or the acting to be honest but, it definitely satisfied my craving to see things getting blown up  .

All the reports on this film have been indifferent, think I will try and see it this week at the big screen, dyam DeeVeeDee specialist must be in the Pen coz I have not seen them to get my pirate version.

Another film looking interesting is Fantastic Four. (Wondering if it will match Xmen 1 & 2) Bad man film
