But I'm really surprised that no one mention my all time favorite 'Glory' with Denzel, Morgan Freeman etc etc.. That was a fantastic film..

Glory had some of the best Black male acting talent on screen ever.Andre Braugher is one of the best actors on Earth period.

Well since I already mentioned this talented brother, I thought I'd post an update on him...

There is just too much to mention but the first few that come to mind is Love Jones because its a film with all blacks and its about love and not gangs drugs and violence which at the time it came out made a nice change plus the soundtrack is brilliant.

Amistad because the main brother is just fine fine fine .....can I get a witness Ashanti banana.gifbanana.gifbanana.gif

Another film that quickly springs to mind is City of Gods........this film is outstanding and based on the true story of gangs in Brazil and a photographer.....EXCELLENT!!

Dunno how I forgot City of God... That film was a classic, best Ive seen in a very very long time.  The way the story was told in sequences and flashbacks was brilliant.

I don't know what possessed me to watch city of God. Its a great great film but Definitely not for the faint hearted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats one of the films i had nightmares about. What made it scary for me is the fact that it actually happened. I'm gonna be thinking twice before I go backpacking around brazil lol.

Greetings All,

Slightly OT, but I just thought I'd mention that my sister spent a year in Brazil (gap year from uni) and she really hated it. Trust me, England ain't got a patch on Brazil when it comes to overt racism and poverty.

Back on topic (sort of) how does one define a 'Black film'?

Anyway, in terms of who I consider to be good actors/actresses the following is a list off the top of my head (and therefore might have a few omissions):

Paul Robeson, Sidney Potier, Laurence Fishburne, Carl Bradshaw, Vanessa Williams, Vivica Fox, Jamie Foxx, Cedric The Entertainer, Ice Cube, Carl Lumbly, Samuel L Jackson...

There are probably others but I have a really poor memory so I'll stop here for now.

I dont know if the matrix really counts. I think we are talking about movies where almost the whole cast is black.

Well here are my favs:

"Coming To America"-A very funny, enjoyable movie, despite those fake, generic Pan-African accents.  Also the site of Eriq LaSalle in that drippy, Jheri Curl (Let your So-o-o-ul Glow!) gets me rolling on the floor everytime.

"Claudine"-From the 70s: Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones' comedy/drama about a woman with six kids and a garbage man who fall in love.  The movie is also a good commentary about how social service agencies would much rather have poor, black people solely dependent on government than see them succeed.

"Fresh"-A 12 year old boy avenges his school-yard crush's death, his best friend's death and saves his drugged-up older sister from crack-ho'ing by setting up the local drug dealers who are responsible.  The boy applies his chess-playing skills to achieve his revenge.  Samuel L. Jackson plays the boy's barely-there father/city-park chess partner.
