We've already touched on this talented brother...best known for his work on the popular televison drama ER...Eriq La SalleBefore making it big on the small screen, this brother was honing his skills in theater. He is also known for his role in the Eddie Murphy film Coming To America...since hanging up his t.v. scrubs,  La Salle has added director and producer to his resume'.

Never mind the fact that I got my name from one of her movies butI just saw my first Pam Grier movie about 3 weeks ago and I'm hooked. The movie was "Black Mama/White Mama and last week I saw "Coffee". I have yet to see "Foxy Brown":(

I would say the actor I admire the most is Tim Reid (Venus Flytrap on "WKRP").

http://www.timreidproductions.com/biography.htm

Because rather than wait around for white Hollywood executives to offer strong, positive, and diverse black movie roles, Tim put up his own money and built his own movie studio called New Millennium Studios.

http://www.nmstudios.com/

Now Tim and his wife Daphne Maxwell-Reid (the 2nd Aunt Viv on "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air"), make the movies they want.  I met the Reids last year and they are truly an inspiration.

BS and Silkysoul

If Will Smith even DARES to THINK about remaking this movie I will hunt him down and kill him.:X  There is absolutely NO need.  Its a perfect movie that cant be improved upon in any way.

John Amos(Thats gangster!!)

Sideny Poitier (stupid hypnotism thing LOL)

Bill Cosby (The red suit and walk)

Jimmy Walker (way too funny to be allowed)

Perfect movie.  A remake would kill it.

John Singleton could have done alot more with the story. Some of my friends from Florida who know of the tragedy were angry that he took so many liberties.

Its a needed  much film, but flawed at the same time.

What I remember most about "Let's Do It Again" was the gangster named "Biggie Smalls".

Lately, I been gravitating to old black comedies and dramas from the '70s. Here is my list of some favorites:

  • All of Pam Grier's stuff (with the exception of "Black Mama/White Mama".  An exploitive, women-in-prison movie). "Friday Foster" is my personal favorite because it's a little more lighthearted action movie than her other stuff.  And Yaphet Kotto is her sidekick!
  • "Five on The Black Hand Side"- A battle of the sexes comedy about a chauvinistic barber/husband and his wife who wants changes in the marriage.  The movie "Barbershop" clearly lifted a lot of ideas from this movie.  Also the Afrocentric wedding scene is absolutely beautiful.
  • "Darktown Strutters"-A '70s blaxplotation comedy that was a parody of '70s blaxplotation comedies, with some social commentary thrown in for good measure. The plot of this movie is that a young female biker is searching for her missing mother, only to find out she'd been kidnapped by a "Kentucky Fried Chicken" type BBQ chain owner. The owner is kidnapping black mothers so he can steal their BBQ recipes and make his restaurant chain even bigger.  I particularly like the scene where the Dramatics sing "What You See Is What You Get" from a dungeon cell while the lead character is battling white men in pig costumes. The film's humor is in the vein of "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka". Very funny and very bizarre!!!

Tom Hanks won the oscar for Philidelphia when Denzel was nminated for oscar. For those who have seen both, ws that a correct???

The Brothers is a good film but I think it was a bit to cartoony in its execution. It tried to much to get away from stereotypes and as result felt a bit fake. Also, when the judge sees that the girl is a teacher, and says ' so whats the pay like' that didnt sit with me.
