I have seen Two can play that game, Brown Sugar, The Color Purple, Set it off and Disappearing Acts.

All were good but the technique the director opted to use in "Two can play that game" was a little distracting for me, you know seeing Vivica Fox' character speaking to the camera, just didn't do it for me but I liked the storyline.

"Brown Sugar" is a cute romantic comedy, the only thing is though if you aren't into hip hop some of the analogies they used to depict the back story and some of the lead story will be lost on you. Mos Def was great in this film. He is one talented brother.

Disappearing Acts...Wesley Snipes did his thing in this one, a little two well though, LOL! I tried to be sympathetic to his character but in my opinion he didn't have any redeeming qualities. This is a good movie for young women just like Sanaa Lathan's character who get caught up in a physical relationship and lose sight of their goals. Good acting all around in this one.

Set it Off...Queen Latifiah proved she had acting chops in this one. The story was a little hard to believe but the film was good though.

The Color Purple..this is when the world got introduced to Whoopi Goldberg. Great movie, as usual Danny Glover did his thing.blkthumbsup

Some good movies there. Though I've noticed that some "black" movies released nowadays are beginning to follow a similar format. Take "The Wood", The Brothers", "Two Can Play That Game", "Brown Sugar", "Love and Basketball" and to a certain extent, "Disappearing Acts". They're just becoming a bit too monotonous.

I'm all for black movies and really love seeing black people representing in movies, but in some cases it becomes a bit overdone. The movies are still entertaining... it's just that most of the time I can't help but say, "I've seen this before somewhere."

Then you've got the downright hilarious. "Exit Wounds" for example. And not just because of Steven Segal! "Cradle 2 the Grave" was another... just not believable at all! Apologies if anyone actually liked those two!!

But as I said, some good movies there!

Good Morning Nuvoue,
The only one from your list that I have heard of is the second one. I have not seen it but it has been generating a lot of positive buzz. If it's an independent or art-house flick, it will be hard for me to find it in a big theater chain, plus my location (small town) has me at a disdvantage as well.

hi black movie watch looks great. i am looking for a film city of god have you got that can i by it off your website. if not can you order it for me it is a brillant film and any films buffs out there should check it out. Another must see movie is rabbit proof fence it is deeeeep it blatantly shows you what the white australians were up to. Killing off our aborigine brothers and sisters by kidnapping them and  forcing them to mix with white australians until there is no more aborigine skin colour left. This is a true story and the genocide was backed by the government, does it sound familar?

70% of our black brothers in england have white partners and 40% of our sisters are doing it voluntary.

What's your favorite "Black Film, Actor/Actress".. Serious/funny/biopic, a scene a line whatever..Is the choice that vast, would your choice make others remember something they have forgotten..??

I've got to say Crooklyn..The little girl whose mum was ill & she was sent away to an aunt who straightened her hair.. I think this was a Spike Lee film with DelroyLindo..

MalcolmX..Spike again, Why didn't Denzil get an "Oscar"..??!! I loved the walk when they got the zoot suits..(What a way blackman love to pop style)..

Higher Learning..IceCube, LaurenceFishburne, TyraBanks, OmarEpps, ReginaKing & Busta..The whole film was just off the chain for me just loving it..Busta for me steals the show..

Friday..IceCube, ChrisTucker, NiaLong..Oh yeh oh my gosh, hold on I still laughing..When Smokey was recalling the time he took the angel dust, was a killer..

Love & Basketball..OmarEpps & SanaahLathan..Oh Sanaah, Sanaah..The end when the script was flipped & we saw Sanaah playing  pro basketball & Omar was on the side with their daughter..

Clockers..MekhiPhifer, apart from endorsing "pepto bisnal"?? , Mekhi's quest to get that choo choo train..

SmileOrange..jamflag film..The lines "me can't t'wim Miss Gladys & orange will rotten out your balls sir"..What a thing..

What's Love Got To Do With It..Angela(should've got an Oscar )Bassett & LaurenceFishburne..The fight in the limo..

Nuff more I can think of but what can you peeps come up with..??!!

Ps..Then they go & give HalleBerry an Oscar for DAT!!!!!!!!  confused3

wotsits i really beleive that if Malcolm X the movie had been released now he would have received an oscar but things have changed A LOT in the last 10 years, it would never have happened back then i dont think regardless of his performance :(

I think Denzels performance in JohnQ was amazing, but is it just me that thinks that actors such as Louis Gossett Jnr and Forest whitacker are never given their due confused3

MsUnderstOOd I think yr rite, LouisGossettJr has had sum serious roles in sum major films ForrestWhitaker for me is the epitomie of an under-rated actor, I think he's a director now..I think the way he acted in PanicRoom was bloody brilliant, his whole demeanour was just awesome..

MalcolmX I'm not so sure about, I still think it would be a bit 2 much for the Hollywood bigwigs dem, like WillSmith in Ali..Just a bit to much as I think they would see it, Intellectual/political input..

Blacks did not start making movies in the last ten to twenty years ago. I think we must always include Sidney Portier when mentioning great Black actors. Some others that may/may not be familier in the UK, but have a body of work that can be applauded:

Male Actors:

 Ossie Davis, William Marshall,Morgan Freeman,Andre Baugher,Paul Winfield,Samuel Jackson,Harry Belafonte,Richar Roundtree,

Female Actors:

Dorothy Dandridge, Ruby Dee, Abbey Lincoln, Diahnn Carroll, Angela Bassett,Pam Grier, Regina Taylor,

@ wotsits18

I don't see how I missed this, LOL! Especially since it's a favorite topic of mine.

Let's see I have so many favorites but I want to give some shine to a brother that is so under-rated and under appreciated and his name is Don Cheadle.

He was brilliant in the films, Trafffic, Devil in a Blue Dress and Boogie Nights...the man is a wonderful actor who just doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Being a female...I am a sucker for a dramatic film and I tend to lean toward a good romantic picture. One of my all-time favs is the 1975 movie,  Mahogany starring Billy Dee Williams and Diana Ross. Given the history of black love on film and television, this stood out for me because you had the pairing of one of our leading matinee idols (Williams) with Ross who was a very popular singer back in the late 60's and 70's. The flick was directed by music mogul Berry Gordy.

Williams at this time was the equivilant of Denzel...when you said Billy Dee, most of us ladies knew who you were talking about, LOL!

In the film they played Brian and Tracey...he was a politician/community activist and she an aspiring designer

Favorite line...success is nothing without someone you love to share it with...(ashanti melting big time, I'll be back to this thread as soon as I get up,  ha!, ha!, ha!)

Drama...love a good drama for so many reasons, one reason is the ability to make one feel the plight of the character or characters....connect emotionally.

One such movie that did that for me was 1972's Sounder

which starred power house actors Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson.

The film was about a family of sharecroppers and their struggles. The movie also starred a young Kevin Hooks
who went on to star in the television series the White Shadow and who is now an accomplished Director( Passenger 57 starring Wesley Snipes). Sadly we lost Winfield this year but his memory will live on in all his television and film projects including  last year's Sounder 2003 in which he reunited with Hooks who directed the remake of the classic film.niceone.gif
