I watched this film on Saturday night. I didn't intend to watch it to the end cos I was knackered and needed to take a bath, but it was so good that I had to sit in front of the box until the very end and take my bath in the early hours after it done.
I had heard about this film but never knew the story or much about it. I think Denzel was AMAZING in this role. The film was gripping all the way through and I can't believe the man never won an Oscar. Did anybody else watch it? What did you think?

| i had seen this film year's ago it was cold the way they threw him in prison from he was a young boy. but i thinking the same thing, he held his own in this film. im not even sure he was nominated for an oscar and i didnt really like training day i really don't know what all the hype was around that. especially when you've seen denzel in roles stronger roles like 'rubin carter'. it just goes to show if the film is predominantly black it wont get a look in.

I actually bought 'Training Day' cos of the hype and had to watch it about 3 times before I could say I'd watched it cos it was so boring I just kept losing track. I think that was one of the worst roles Denzel has played. Yeah it does seem that just cos he was playing a bad guy he was able to get the Oscar, the Academy just could not reward him in any role that did not fit the stereotype of black man as the good guy. Like with Halle she had to appear naked and simulating sex with an old white racist piece of sh*t before she could win one. I could not believe that was the role she won the award for when I finally got round to watching the film - which was utter sh*te.
Hmm, interestingly, I searched Rubin Carter on Google to see if there were any Oscar nominations for the film and came up with a whole bunch of sites basically saying that the whole film was a lie and that he did commit those murders, was never targeted by one racist cop, he was a sh*t boxer and various other things that attempt to discredit the man. Astonishing!

Basically...that was 1 of denzels best performances and was overlooked by the academy basically cus he was black..no other reason for it...before denzel himself, Halle Berry and Cuba won their academy awards...black people were always overlooked by the undercover racists ....However because Denzel always came out with moving performances every movie i think the academy felt pressured 2 give him an award so they just gave him an award for the next film he did which happened 2 be training day.....i feel the same thing goes for halle berry cus i thought monsters ball was good but didnt think she would get a oscar for it......looking back im sure even denzel would have preferred 2 get the oscar for "the hurricane " thn trainin day.....i mean black pplz have been overlooked since sidney poitier....morgan freeman only one his 1st oscar last year after how long...and samueL L. Jackson...the highest grossing actor in hollywood history has never won an oscar

I watched it too!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG its such a brilliant film. I love Denzel, he's such a fab actor. I couldnt get over Denzel's perfomance in that film. The whole film just touched me and right at the end when you saw a real life footage of Ruben Carter himself holding up the boxing belt he was unfairly denied from, i was like
Superb film and great cast!!!!!!!!!
Having watched it though, I cant believe he never did get a nomination or won an oscar for this role- although im not suprised as to why.
For all of you denzel fan's: You have to watch 'The Manchuian Candinate'.
Heavy film!!!!!!! Its out on dvd at the moment. That woman who plays the lead in 'Diary of a mad black woman' (i think its called that) is in it too. Kimberly something...
anyways just go get it!!!!

| As far as im concerned, Denzel should have been had an oscar from when he starred in the biographical film about Malcolm X. That is one of my favorite movies by far. Black actors never seem to get oscars in movies when they play strong black characters. Denzl had to play a corrupt ganster cop in order to win something that has been owed to him for the longest time.

LOL...
Expecting the white establishment to hand out awards to a black man playing MALCOM X in a Spike Lee movie LOL...
Look how silly that sounds.
Denzel knows WE loved him for it and Im sure that is enough for the man. We dont really need to beg scraps and hollywood table do we?
Denzel is not a big actor because he got an oscar... he is a big actor because he is talented and made movies that WE like and WE respect him for. Its all that matters guys.

Beg scraps? For a well acted performance? I think not. Just because the white establishment isnt much of a fan of the real Malcolm X, doesnt mean that Denzel did any worse of an job playing his character in a movie. Whether it had been for Glory, John Q, Hurricane, or many other great movies that hes starred in, the point is, Denzel should have had an Oscar way before now. And for one of his better performances, for that matter. But I suppose since they havent given an Oscar out to a black actor in a while, they thought it was about time so by chance Denzel ended up with the award. What a coincidence that two black actors Halle berry and Denzel Washington, both ended up with an Oscar the very same year.

why didnt he win an oscar for hurricane? because it wasnt a good movie, good story and all but not a goodmovie, you where emotionally moved by a true story thats it. nothing special bout the movie its self or denzels acting in that movie.
training day on ther other hand he blow that one away.

I have to disagree with you there bro, hurricane was a good movie, one of Denzel's best films, before I watched it I thought everyone was just hyping and moaning that he didn't get an oscar, but after watching it I was convince the man clearly deserved it.
On the flipside I thought Training Day was an okay movie, to much hype around it, and perhaps they gave him an oscar to apologise for not getting it, the previous year and suck up to black people by giving one to Halle and honouring Sindney poitier the same time.

Kevin Spacey for American Beauty won Best Actor that year. I saw that film and don't even remember the details of it due to how rubbish it was. Denzel was the early favourite to win and was nominated along with some others (Russell Crowe, Richard Farnsworth, Sean Penn) in films that no one will remember so there is no way he should have gone home empty handed that night. He should have won that Oscar without a doubt.
@ SoulMachine: It was a good movie based on a good story and if it wasn't a good movie it wouldn't have been able to move anyone emotionally, a good story does not always make a good movie. Denzel's performance was OUTSTANDING and if anything that is what moves you.
I think the story of Howard Hughes is a good one but that film Aviator is very hard to watch (for me) cos I don't think the movie is very good, it's just too long and boring. Your mind wanders, you lose track and lose interest. This does not happen with Hurricane. The mark of a good movie is that it holds your attention throughout - it should not be difficult to concentrate on the story and the time that you're watching it should move quickly; which can only happen if you are engrossed.

you think Denzel performanvce in Hurricane was better then Spaceys. I think we gonna have to agree to disageree on that one. Denzel plays the opressed/angry black man evrey well, but in this film Spacey plays the avergae american , disaffceted with life, loveless marriage, kids hate him, no job bum. And he was brilliant
But undesrved oscars are nothing new. Any1 who has sit throught the joy of Sideways will ask themselves how Thomas Haden Church didnt walk away with that ocar

I fell head over heels and completely in love with Denzel when he walked out of prison as Hurricane Carter in the scene where he is being released. His body was to die for! I didn't think much of him before but ever since I have nothing but mad respect and love for the man and I appreciate his work to the fullest.

well, i really dont think he performed better at this movie than on training day really and i dont think he deserved an oscar he did well no doubt for the hurricane. hes among my top 5 favourite actors so i have watched almost all his movies and i think training day was his best performance. you cant even compare his performance on the hurricane to glory.

Cash your attitudes a bit blase' old chap. Black actors have been getting snubbed at the oscars since cotton picking came outta fashion. I remember Samuel Lewis one year said he aint ever going again.
Personally i thought American Beauty was a pile of sh*t and i really do mean that.

We havnt had ONE black actor, thats not ONE, i repeat thats not ONE black actor since Sidney Poiter win a damm oscar. Come on.
There are times when our cries are justified and times they are not. This is most definately one of the former.
