I just wanted to ask a question about the film "the interpreter" with Nicole Kidman and Sean penn,I haven't seen it yet, hence my enquiry, but from the trailers and massive coverage its getting in the UK,nicole was supposed to be an interpreter who understood an "unsual" African language, now forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that language would never have seemed "unusual" to the african people who speak it,so my real question is why was the interpreter a white woman?? I doubt if the language was french it would have been played by a black woman,I heard that the other person who was being considered was Charlize theron, Maybe someone who's seen it could explain to me why the interpreter had to be white, how intergral was it to the role???

Lol....since reading the reviews i haven't been able to stop laughing at the stupidity of this film.....even Sean Penn, the reformed wife beater who champions for the so called *third world* people can't see how pathetic and an ass this film is.

Well, it could have been worse with Berry or...blkwonder oh well, i can't think of a *black actress* they could have used....so who cares.....i for one will NOT be going to give them my money by even rating it let alone spend a tener at the cinemas for it.

I think if black people are gone moan about this, then we should not be watching it in the first place! Went to the cinema to pick up the time table, and guess who i found queeing up to spend their money on this crap....BLACK people....there were only two whites, with their coconuts boyfriends.......perhaps those ones don't read..confused2 i just shook me head and walked off.......ahhh, they say ignorance is BLISS!

I put the blame on Tarzan who started this whole thing!!! Seriously, its the same old stuff...Its seems like according to these so called great white directors, we as blacks are only as good as the manual roles such as "scout" or "tracker". A great black director has to step up and put us on the map!!!!

The role had to be white because interacial love stories dont make money in the states

Hence why Eva Mendes was the lead in Hitch instead of the likes of Reese Witherpoon( who would have been perfect for the role) or someone else

@ esezobo

I await ur findings lol...

@ Dimoke

Perhaps u're right, mayb we're to blame for patronizing their crap offerings...

@ Cashmoney

true inter-racial relationships may not sell, but the same was said at some point about black people not being able to sell movies, but now we have will smith, samuel jackson, eddie murphy etc..making it happen,People need to be re-educated sometimes,IR relationships r everywhere now..

On the fact of the hitchhiker film ,I saw the original film and it was not necessary for the "mos def" alien character to be white, maybe with an english accent but not necessarilly white, besides the settings new film is now,so him being black is no biggie..

@ Sblizzy

We do need black directors, but good ones though I've seen some appalling ones..

cash money  u chatting blank , not will smith  who is the biggest black acter box office drawer rather its samuel L jasckson. After samuel Jackson films have made more money than any other actor with exception of Harrison Ford . With the release of start wars 111, Jackson will be the biggest box officer star of all time  and not will smith. u don't believe read the cbsnews article bellow.

Samuel L. Jackson Means Money

CBS) For years, Samuel L. Jackson was referred to as the hardest-working man in Hollywood. Well, all of that hard work has paid off, because now he's also the most financially successful.

His films have grossed more at the box office than those of any other actor in history. His latest movie, "XXX: State of the Union," is a sequel to one of his biggest hits. He talked to The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith about his role in the "XXX" series.

"I'm able to call on people, touch into their patriotism," he says. "Even if they don't realize they're still very patriotic, in the end, they find a way to get the job done.

Vin Diesel, who was in the original, is not in the sequel.

"You know what? I'm really not sure what happened," says Jackson. "But like folks always said about old soap stars at contract negotiating time, you ended up on the operating table and depending on how successful your negotiations were, you lived or died."

The sequel may not have Diesel but it does have Ice Cube, with whom Jackson had not worked before. "He's the hero of this particular film," says Jackson. "It changes the genre in another kind of way, because it's an urban story about somebody trying to overthrow the government. So he brings a street credibility to the film that we didn't have before."

Smith wanted to know what it's like for Jackson to make a big action movie. Does he spend a lot of time waiting for the technical things to work?

"It's great for me, because I've always played those games," he says. "When we were kids, we would go and watch films like that and go home and pretend to be soldiers, cowboys, Indians, cops and robbers. So I played gun games all my life. The big difference in doing films like this is when you shoot somebody, they don't say, 'You missed.' They fall down. It's great."

What is it like for Jackson to realize that he has become such a big box-office draw?

"Well, actually, what happened was I was doing some pick-up shots on 'Star Wars.' George (Lucas) said that I was $150 million away from catching Harrison (Ford). I'm like, 'Catching him how?' He's like, 'In box office gross.'

"I didn't realize that," Jackson continues. "I didn't even realize there was a Web site you can access that situation. He said, 'By the time you finish "Star Wars," you'll be No. 1,' forgetting 'Incredibles' was about to come out. That kind of kicked me over the top.

"Right now," he quips, "I'm busy making space between me and Harrison."

Speaking of "Star Wars," at Smith's urging, Jackson reports, "I guess I can say that this particular episode is a lot darker than all the other episodes have been... Very Shakespearean, in terms of the machinations of all of the powers that be, bloodier. I get to go out in a...blaze of glory. It was great that I finally talked George into giving me this great light saber battle."

For Jackson, it was no problem working as an actor with the computer technology in the "Star Wars" movies.

"I grew up using my imagination," he explains. "So when somebody hands you something and they say, 'Well, this thing is there, and this thing is over there, and you're fighting all these things,' I just go back to my bedroom when I was a kid. Turn on my mind and let all these things attack me, and I do it.

"And sure, the language is not Pulitzer prize-winning language, but my job as an actor is to make that language fit my character and the way that everyone in the film talks," he continues. "So I have no problem saying stiff things like... 'May the force be with you.' "

Name me a film where Samuel L Jackson has beenteh MAIN charcter and his film has cleaned u at the box office. Like I said, dont be confused by the numbers

Will Smith is one of the only peps in hollywood wher the bank will give you a blank cheque if you said he was starring in his movie. Perhaps the only person onhis leevl is Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts. These gus are beyond A-Listers

Check Will Smiths numbers for his last 7 films, all over £100m

That so called flp Wild Wild West STILL opened with $52 million on the week it was relased

I exlpained the Jackson thing in your other post

Film was boring. I like my thrillers with a lot of suspense and fair amount of action. This film had none of that.

It doesnt matter at all, the biggest racial casting f**k up I've seen is in Daredevil (sh*t beyond belief) casting Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin, not only is he white, he's pale white, its stupid when its an established character. They made the Green Lantern black in the Justice League as well, its bloody silly.

This film was crap, no chemistry between Penn and Kidman, it fails as a thriller and most annyoing of all, the unimaginative stereotypical views of Africa. The only descent part was when she confronts the president guy at the end and talks of the hope they had for the nation when he came into power, which could be applied to the likes of Mugabe.

Ahh so I must see this film on dvd sometime,my personal instinct is that she should never have played it,I feel like it encourages the "white south African " syndrome, and that is just bull, considering we could never play a westner with such exceptional skills#

It would have been a fantastic part for a black actress. It would have only required tweaking the script. Oh well.

This kind of thing should spur people on to produce good work that can be sold to Hollywood, it can happen.

Even if they used a black actress it would have been a dumb movie.  It was too silly for words.

A rare dialect of a small language from an obscure country that hardly anybody even there speaks.  An interpreter who is at the UN in america overhears a secret murder plot in said langauge and she just happens to be from that country and understands it?

Nicole Kidman or Whoopie Goldberg that is a stupid ass dumb plot.
