Greetings Family,
How are you? I am back in Kampala on my eleventh day
in Uganda, East Africa. The trip has been fantastic.
Today I visited the Mountains of the Moon in
southwestern Uganda. According to some accounts, this
is the region that the ancient Egyptians came from.
So it was a very emotional visit.
I not only visited the mountain range but I spent part
of the afternoon with a community of Batwa, also known
as the Bambuti and also known to some as pygmies. It
was a first for me and it was both exciting and
depressing.
First of all, we were within about fifteen miles of
the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of the
Congo. It was heavy rain forest and similar groups of
Africans live on both sides of the border.
These were the shortest people that I have ever seen!
There were seventy-five of them, including women and
children and I met the king and queen. Indeed, I have
met a number of royal personages on this trip and
taken a lot of photos.
So I talked with the Batwa for a long time and they
even performed some rituals for us. They still
maintain their traditional beliefs but they are under
attack. They have been relocated from the forest to a
squalid little settlement and now largely subsist by
begging. This was the sad part.
Uganda is such a beautiful country and I have seen a
lot of it and met a bunch of wonderful people. A
couple of days ago I did a really big radio interview
and I have now lectured very successfully at five
universities, with each lecture better than the one
before it. Altogether I have probably addressed more
than a thousand people. Next year I intend to accept
a university lectureship here. Everybody is inspired
and so am I.
I have seen sunsets over Lake Nyanza and charted the
stars under Mount Elgon. I have seen the source of
the White Nile and seen lighting and rainbows. And
they have these exquisite herds of cattle here!
Later this week I am scheduled to go to Rwanda and
next week to South Sudan. And then to Dar Es Salaam
and Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Next May I will be bringing a group here. I hope that
you can be a part of it. It will be an experience you
will never forget.
The spirit of Pan-Africanism is stronger here than
anywhere I have ever been. Thanks to the Ancestors
for my hosts--the Marcus Garvey Pan-Afrikan Institute.
They are truly incredible sisters and brothers and I
am confident that Marcus Garvey himself would be
proud.
In love of Africa,
Runoko Rashidi in Kampala, Uganda
