I belive that we are suffering today because in the begining we never considerd ourselves to be brotheres and sisters. maybe if we would of stayed together things would of been diffrent. Maybe our history and culture would still be with us. But we chose to seperate ourselvs and we still do this today... I was reading this And I just started wondering if things would of been diffrent if we saw "ourselves" as equals.

"The French Egyptologist Abbe Émile Amélineau who found in various tombs the earliest known ethnographic documents and his descriptions of them become immediately clear when we compare them to contemporary/traditional African concepts of race and ideology; the following examples are not unique to those peoples listed but are common throughout Black Africa (ie, Chauvinism):

The Amhara nationality (A personal account)
To the Amhara traditionalist, the Amhara nationality is the center of the world. Although, it is a part of the Black family, it stands above it (Rome.t) where the rest of the Blacks are inferior/strangers/etc (Nahasu).
Regarding the non-Blacks; the Arab minority in Ethiopia, Europeans, are all considered to be 'non-peoples.'
If you were, as an African-American for example, made an honorary Amhara and you asked one of your Amhara brothers to get a Shama for your girlfriend:
a) if your girlfriend is White, he would supply you with a Shama right away, because a non-Black person wearing a Shama would be viewed as quaint and amusing in a non-threatening way, but
b) if your girlfriend is a Black and not an Amhara, you'll get a lot of beating around the bush, and no Shama! She would be viewed as an imposter, an interloper, and a threat to the status of the Amhara as Rome.t (The Men).

The Masai ethnic group (Documentary of interview with a Masai)
This exact worldview is also held by the Masai of East Africa; they are the center of the world (Rome.t) and all other Blacks, like the Luo, Kikuyu, etc., are also strangers/barbarians (Nahasu).
A White reporter was interviewing this Masai gentlemen in a documentary and was asking him about the Masai's idea of what is beautiful; and was seemingly trying to insinuate "white women" into the conversation, when the Masai said matter of factly that the Masai did not consider White people to be people at all...

The Tutsi ethnic group (Era Bell Thompson - archives)
This information was taken from the late Era Bell Thompson's archives (she was an editor for Ebony magazine).
Miss Thompson was interviewing the Mwami (king) of the Tutsi and she asked him if he was familiar with Negro Americans (this was written in the 1950s):
Mwami - "Yes, I have heard of him."
Thompson - "Do you feel that the Tutsi are superior to the Negro-Americans? (sic!!)
Mwami - "Yes"
And of course, to every other member of the Black family!
Non-Blacks are not in the equation, since they are not considered to be people.

Them Africans think they're...
This ignorance of Black African chauvinism when it expresses itself to African-Americans leads to confusion and the oft repeated mantra "Them Africans think they're better than us." (usually this is repeated by those who have never even met a continental African)

So when Amélineau wrote on the hierarchy of the ethnic groupings he saw in the tombs, it makes perfect sense, it's Black African chauvinism at work:

1) - the Black nationality of Kemet (Rome.t na rome.t); the superior Kememou
2) - the rest of the Blacks (Nahasu = strangers/barbarians/less than us)
--
3) - the Semitic folks (Namu = nomads and would fit the same description as non-peoples)
4) - the White folks (Tamhu = red ones and would also fit the same description as non-peoples)"

Interesting post, Ebony.  But isn't it a bit much for you to want people who have not experienced racism as those of us have in the diaspora to look at race the same as we do?

"Black" as racial consciousness has been imposed on Blacks in the diaspora, who have suffered through slavery, segregation and colonialism.  I would expect that some African tribes who have experienced similar racism (via colonialism, and apartheid) would have the same degree of Black conscientiousness as those of us in the West.

Good topic though.

It is amazing to me, that even in this modern age, after 2,000 years of White people kicking Black A**, there are STILL Black people who don't take the White man as a serious threat. That's not pride, that's stupidity.

The sad fact is that it's not new: the ancient Blacks of Italy and Greece didn't think that Whites were sufficiently dangerous, to where they would have to put aside their differences and join forces to keep them out. Those Blacks no longer exist! The same goes for native peoples of the Americas.

Then you get the dumb A**'s like the Persians, who in their mindless attempt to get respect, (Egyptians and Babylonians were considered the most advanced cultures in the world), wind up handing the world to Whites on a silver platter. Whites didn't defeat Babylon, Canaan, Anatolia and Egypt, the dumb A** Persians did, and once their civilization and military fell apart - again because of their stupidity - Alexander just waltzed in, when will we ever learn. (Forget the B.S. about Alexanders great victory, the Persians imploded).

Every black ethnic group thinks that way.  They facilitate some kind of interethnic rivalry while  trained NOT to see non blacks or view them as invisible.  Even here, black people always grimace at each other while 'blind' to other races around them.

Don't worry too much. Europeans have been known to war with eachother, too.

It was only a hundred years ago that Britain and France signed the 'entente cordiale'.

Before that they were constantly at each-others throat. I guess the difference would be that white people have decided to put aside their differences.

Black people haven't reached that stage yet.

We will.

This is an interesting thread.  I take a practical approach to things, and I think everyone will accept that what black people want, whether they are in Africa, America, Britain or wherever, is that they can lead productive lives, without fear, with justice, and not to be in want.

I think it is true that there is a dislocation of culture and experience between CA's and Diasporans.  I also think that to unite people, we need to accept one another as we are, drawing on experiences to learn from them productively.  I don't beleive setting a hierachy of ethnic groupings is useful, actually I think it is totally insane!

Why would Diasporans want to go back to Africa or engage in meaningful dialogue with peoples who view them as being inferior?  Don't we get that enough from white people?  Why does one kin of black folk have to repeat the same mistakes white people have made?  Yes history repeats itself, but if we have sense we try not to repeat things that cause bad feeling.  I think that these pretensions about who is better than the other are counter-productive.  Black people need unity, not posturing.

Part of the reality of the situation is that many people look at the past in Africa and the ancient traditions as if they can be revived today.  Maybe they can, but I believe pragmatism is the most pressing thing, feeding people, providing stability, loosening the mental shackles of colonialsism and economic imperilism.  What is the point of saying "I have preserved the ancient traditions and am ethnically better than you" when your people are dying, at war, being ruled by corruption?

Part of the problem is expressed in the phrase "united we stand, divided we fall", and as we are culturally dislocated this makes unity all the more difficult.  In my view it is better to drop the pretensions to ethnic superiority, because death comes to us all, and instead work toward that unity, gaining stability for people, and when that is done, then you have a basis on which other things can be built securely.
