I'm a eighteen year old university student, who has recently broken up from University and a bad ACS (African Carribean Society) also part of my university. I have been thinking about this for quite a long time and suprisingly I came across a group of boys who were filming a documentary on contemporary black culture. We all agreed that it might be helpful to see a resurgence of the black panther movement, perhaps in London.
It might sound a bit bizarre or extreme but I feel that in the 60s black people had "one voice" and were more united at the pinnacle of the Black Panther's movement: boycotts, freedom of speech, fear, love and passion for their culture. Where are all these things now?

The 1960's were a different time for everyone not just Black People.
And if you checkout the history there were lots of political divisions here in England as in the US.
Besides the Panthers were Marxist can't see marxism siting comfortably with many people today...Besides the enemy as changed it's tactics as a result of the struggles of that period...Back then there was no doubt who the enemy was...What the fight was about.

I agree; 1960s was a change for everyone. I was actually not aware that the black panthers were on par to Marxism. And to be honest I have little care about something that I don't know about.
I suggest a resurgence of the black panthers because I liked the way they tried to bring together black people. Furthermore there is no one to represent black people right now. Political change NEVER sits comfortably but it is worth a try. I am willing to help out, via societies like the ACS.

| As already mentioned things have changed but a revised Black Panther Movement would not be a bad idea given the type of people who claim to represent us. Cue MGL for the Pictures lol.

You know nothing of the Panthers but you care enough to see them resurrected!!!!!!!!!

In the 80's my brother told me he had been a member. I had never considered getting involved. He said his group thought the Panthers in California were nuts though. At the time it was legal to carry a gun as long as it was visible.

Assalaam Alaikum
I am one who is from West Oakland (Lower Bottom) where Seale and Newton grewup. I saw them start and end the Black Panther Party. I attended before and after school programs sponsored by the Black Panther Party as a child.
BP were NOT a Marxist organization, thats the 'coentelpro' label
They started out as young progressive fearless 'thinkers' sitting on the porch of Ms. Seale's house, Bobby Seales mother talking about 'how we going to deal with the neighborhood'.
Drugs and Crime NOT about "the man"
Carrying around guns and rifles was a neighborhood policing effort, until it became 'political' and 'symbolic'.
When they marched upon Sacramento, Capital of California and Oakland City Hall the guns and rifles were'nt even loaded.
Huey Newton was shot dead on 9th and Chester in West Oakland over 'crack'.
I see Angela Davis every now and then, the rest are'nt seen in public very often.
They were NOT people to play with at one time. The police at the time did NOT come to certain parts of West Oakland without cars 3-4 deep and heavily armed.
Growing up with the Panthers around we rarily saw police and I dont rememeber even encountering them.
It would'nt work today, black folks have too much respect and fear for caucasians.
The Black Panther Party was destroyed through drugs, women and 'snitches'

It wasn't just the 1960's. The Panthers served breakfast every morning at my school when I was a boy. They also organized play dates for us children at the park. They had a very strong influence on me (I grew up in the Bay Area).
I don't know that there should be a Panther movement in England personally. Every time Black folks over here (USA) do something, the Black brits want to break their necks trying to copy us (soul, jazz, hip hop, style of dress...where do you want me to stop because I can go on and on!). A movement that grows out of your specific socio-political background would be infinitely more effective. It would more adequately address the needs of Black folks in the UK and would unite you brothers and sisters a lot quicker than attempting to revive a culture that you really know nothing about.

| it's a fact that there is more difference between two africans than a white man and an african... there is very little that unites black britains becuase of our diverse backgrounds... ironically because of the robbed identity in AA they have a common thread of slavery to keep you guys together....

I think the New black panthers are DUMB as hell. "in order to save the world we have to exterminate all the white people" oh my f'ing god..just go on youtube and type in exterminate whites.I like the old ones better.

How do you figure that the New Black Panther Party are dumb?I personally think that they show alot of balls not by what they say but also by what they do in support of black folks.You show me any black folks today that can run the KKK out of some red neck town not a whole lot especially this current generation.Any black influenced organization that supports black issues be it The New Black Panther Party,or The Nation Of Islam has my vote and respect.
