Ivan van Sertima is an American historian, linguist and anthropologist at Rutgers University. He was born at Kitty Village, Guyana, South America on 26 January 1935.
Van Sertima studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University where he graduated with honors. He moved to the United States in 1970. He completed his postgraduate studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey where he is now professor of African studies. He is the editor of the Journal of African Civilization, and the author of the book They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America.
