"A good theory organizes the world and organizes one's approach to the world and permits one to be able to evaluate the world in terms of where one wants to go and what one wants to do.

To be without theory then is to approach the world on an ad hoc basis. Always reacting to what other people are doing. Always being overwhelmed by events and overwhelmed by the future. Instead of creating events and creating the future and making the future.

With a good theory and a good concept one is able to do that."

Hey All,

Thanks for the welcome Breadfruit.  You be going for it.  Keep on keepin' on.  One's memories and wisdom are the best riches in this material world to cherish.

Below are some more quotes.

When I was a teen, I prayed to God for peace of mind and wisdom like King Solomon had it like that.  The bible says he then started worshipping idols, riches and women, after he was gifted from God and what not.  Below also is a link that tales of his existence.

We Are African, Whether We Like It Or Not!

Student Question:  Mr. X, your idea of an Afro-American is a very hard lump to swallow.  James Baldwin, in describing a conference of African writers and politicians which took place in Paris in 1956, reported that the conference had difficulty in defining an African personality common to all countries in Africa and to the American Negroes.  The members of the conference, including James Baldwin, began to realize that there was a big rift between American Negroes and the people from Africa.  The American Negro has a totally different set of values and ideas from that of the African.  Therefore, if you still talk about the Afro-American in which the only connection is the color of the skin, this is a racist concept.  Why emphasize Afro-American, which is a racist concept and a reactionary concept, instead of something more positive?

Malcolm X:  I do not think that anything is more positive than accepting what you are.  The Negro in America tries to be more American than anyone else.  The [attempt] has created a person who is actually negative in almost everything he reflects.  We are just as much African today as we were in Africa four hundred years ago, only we are a modern counterpart of it.  When you hear a black man playing music, whether it is jazz or Bach, you still hear African music.  The soul of Africa is still reflected in the music played by black men.  In everything else we do we still are African in color, feeling, everything.  And we will always be that whether we like it or not.

It has long been recognized that the white working class in the U.S.A is historically incapable of participating (as a class) in anti-imperialist struggle. White racism and America's leading role in world imperialism transformed organized labour in the U.S. into a reactionary force.

Similarly, the African cultural facts will only find their profound meaning and their coherence in reference to Egypt."

The possibility of restoring African thinking to its position of world wide acclaim lies with Professor Diop's instruction that: "The return to Egypt in all domains is the necessary condition for reconciling African civilization with history, in order to be able to construct a body of modern human sciences, in order to renovate African culture." (Diop, 1991)

In other words, it seems to me that the objective is neither to adapt African discourse to the parameters of a European discipline nor to modify the European discipline to include African content because both approaches are essentially intellectual versions of neocolonialism.

Rather Africans should construct their own modern disciplines based upon the pillars of African traditions. In this sense we do not have to "invent African history" but merely to restore it, to free it from the debris of the European sandstorm which covered it up.

If we abandon the search for the phantom of an African philosophy (or at least philosophy, "strictly speaking") we may indeed rediscover a much more profound way of thinking about existence. [One might begin to break the bonds of intellectual colonialism by not only recognizing that African traditional deep thought is different from European philosophy but calling it by one of its African names like Medew Netcher (Divine Speech), instead of Greek words such as gnosis which Professor Mudimbe uses. (Carruthers 1995)]

It seems to me that the question is whether African thinkers should give their intellectual allegiance to the traditions of those who debased us including their rebels, or to the traditions of their ancestors.

Jedi Shemsu Jewheti
From an article entitled: "The Invention of Africa" and Intellectual Neocolonialism

Because of that we have developed few men who are able to understand the strenuousness of the age in which we live. Where can we find in this race of ours real men. Men of character, men of purpose, men of confidence, men of faith, men who really know themselves?

I have come across so many weaklings who profess to be leaders, and in the test I have found them but the slaves of a nobler class. They perform the will of their masters without question. To me, a man has no master but God. Man in his authority is a sovereign lord. As for the individual man, so of the individual race. This feeling makes man so courageous, so bold, as to make it impossible for his brother to intrude upon his rights.

Marcus Garvey

The colonisation of Africa lasted for just over 70 years in most parts of the continent. That is an extremely short period within the context of universal historical development. Yet, it was precisely in those years that in other parts of the world the rate of change was greater than ever before. As has been illustrated, capitalist countries revolutionised their technology to enter the nuclear age.

Meanwhile, Socialism was inaugurated, lifting semi-feudal semi-capitalist Russia to a level of sustained economic growth higher than that ever experienced in a capitalist country. Socialism did the same for China and North Korea — guaranteeing the well/being and independence of the state as well as re-organising the internal social arrangements in a far more just manner than ever before.

It is against those decisive changes that events in Africa have to be measured. To mark time or even to move slowly while others leap ahead is virtually equivalent to going backwards. Certainly, in relative terms, Africa’s position vis-à-vis its colonisers became more disadvantageous in the political, economic and military spheres.

The decisiveness of the short period of colonialism and as negative consequences for Africa spring mainly from the fact that Africa lost power.

Power is the ultimate determinant in human society, being basic to the relations within any group and between groups. It implies the ability to defend one’s interests and if necessary to impose one’s will by any means available. In relations between peoples, the question of power determines manoeuvrability in bargaining, the extent to which one people respect the interests of another, and eventually the extent to which a people survive as a physical and cultural entity. When one society finds itself forced to relinquish power entirely to another society that in itself is a form of underdevelopment.

Walter Rodney

If there's one thing I hate more than a black man who acts like a white man it's a black man who acts like a white woman

Brother Omowale Malcolm X

Many Negro homosexuals, acquiescing in this racial death-wish, are outraged and frustrated because in their sickness they are unable to have a baby by a white man. The cross they have to bear is that, already bendiing over and touching their toes for the white man, the fruit of their miscegenation is not the little half-white offspring of their dreams but an increase in the unwinding of their nerves - though they redouble their efforts and intake of the white man's sperm.

Greetings Sister

There are many African Run distributers online and thats where the majority of my books are purchased.

My favourite bookstore in London was Headstart Books and Crafts, in Tottenham.  I haven't been there for a while now though.
