Cash-strapped boxing great Joe Frazier is suing his daughter to find out where his missing millions have gone.
The 63-year-old former heavyweight champ wants Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde to return financial contracts, product endorsements and other business papers she kept when acting as his lawyer from 1989-2004. Frazier, (pictured), fears he is missing out on a big pay day from film royalties, endorsements fees and other income promised in the contracts - and wants to know why Frazier-Lyde is keeping the records.
‘I wouldn’t want to harass her, [she’s] my daughter,’ Frazier said last week. ‘I brought her here in this world and gave her the best of everything. I love her. [But] I don’t talk to her. All I’m asking is for the papers, that’s all.’
The lawsuit claims Frazier-Lyde, who also used to act as her father’s business advisor, has failed to explain where the documents are and refused to accept a letter demanding their return. ‘He has been swindled and mismanaged,’ Frazier’s agent Les Wolff explained. ‘This guy made a lot of money, was the heavyweight champion of the world, and he doesn’t have much. So what happened to it?’
Frazier-Lyde is also a judicial candidate and part-time boxer herself. She is currently campaigning for a seat on Philadelphia’s Municipal Court, with her campaign website noting she is the ‘daughter of former world heavyweight champion “Smokin Joe Frazier and Florence Frazier.’
Last week calls to her law office in North Philadelphia were unanswered and there was no immediate reply to phone and e-mail messages left with her judicial campaign team.
Frazier, who beat Muhammad Ali in 1971, is now divorced and lives alone. According to his lawyer Michael P. Kelly, he makes ‘under six figures’ which includes paying child support for at least one of his 11 children. He now largely gets his income from appearance fees. Wolff has vowed that more lawsuits will follow against other associates who may have defrauded Frazier.
