Black and Asian football fans are being warned they might not "get out alive" if they stray into the wrong areas of Germany during the World Cup.  The stark statement, from Germany's most senior anti-racism campaigner, follows a recent spate of unprovoked attacks by neo-Nazis.

In one, a German of Ethiopian descent was beaten into a coma at a bus station.  Earlier this week, a 30 year old Italian tourist was attacked by three thugs wielding baseball bats in Berlin.

Uwe-Karsten Heye, who was spokesman for former German chancellor Gerhard Shroeder, said: "There are small and mid sized towns near Berlin and other places where I and other places where I would not advise anyone with a different skin colour to go.  They would probably not get out of those places alive".

In Germany, some politicians said his remarks were undermined the country's reputation for tolerance.  But racial tensions have been running high towns near Berlin, venue for six World Cup games.  Immigrant groups are so worried they have drawn up a map of no-go zones.  Moctar Kamara, from Germany's Africa council said: "There are areas where non-whites are simply not safe".

Up to 100,000 English fans - including 1000 from ethnic minorities - will be in Germany for the tournament.  Paul Woodhall from the Fottball Supporters Federation, branded Mr Heye's comments stupid adding: "This might have started a problem when there might not have been one before".

FIFA declined to comment on Mr Heye's outburst but said it was commited to stamping out racism.
