Does anyone here have any information on the Caribbean in the terms of the pros and cons of the various islands, the best places to look for work (I am an academic researcher, Social Sciences and am looking to relocate to the USA or the Caribbean).
I know very little about the Caribbean except that I won't be considering Jamaica as I've heard that it can be very violent! Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Actually your right Jamica has the highest murder rate of any country in the western hemisphere, if you don't believe me just google it.
In my opinion there is no contest, you would be better off in the U.S.A., especially if you want to do better economically but thats just me. Im no expert of the Carribean but I do here alot of good things about Barbados. But again I'd choose the States over the best Carribean island anyday.

| Yes, I would prefer to go the States - it's just so difficult finding a job there if you are not a US citizen. I thought I would go initially to the Caribbean, and go to the US later as I am not keen on staying in the UK for the next couple of years!

so you just want to use the caribbean for your own ends.
jamaica does have its fair share of violence. it doesnt stop the tourist industry. you could always go to haiti which is in process of rebuilding after the overthrow on aristide....
you need to decide what you can do and what can you offer the caribbean if you choose to go there. otherwise you can enjoy the violence that many american places endure. i used to live in the states so i do know what i am talking about as for jamaica thats my people your talking about
you will get violence wherever you go regardless of statistics. once you haveaccepted that then i am sure you will make a better informed decision

| hmm i think youre being a bit harsh ladyday, its very scary considering a move to another country especially if you dont have first hand experience or close relatives/ friends in that place. shes a professional woman hoping to do academic research in the caribbean, thats good enough for me, i think we should welcome her with open arms and encourage more of her caliber to make that move.

The U.S. has a shortage of teachers and community college instructors. And community colleges are growing. You need at least 4 year degree to be a grade school teacher. To be a college instructor you need a post-grad degree. In fact most of my university professors are immigrants. It would be a excellent if you could teach in the black community here seeing that most qualified black teachers move to the white suburbs for more pay.

| Impactplayer, thanks very much for the information regarding community colleges - it's very useful. I have a PhD in Social Policy so I have the qualifications but I haven't got much teaching experience - I wonder if that's necessary? I may try and get some part time teaching work for a few weeks!
