Following up on the success of the Voice of The Youth project. there will be a Performing arts workshop which will work with a number of young people age 13 – 16, from the Aston Cross area. The Drama workshop that we will run in blocks of ten two hour sessions each evening, beginning in the Middle of March 2005. This fund will also help us to secure the services of trained drama teachers that can work with the young people and help bring out their best potential.
These workshops will give young people self-confidence, value and worth, it will also help them to develop their social skill and their inter- personal skills, and at the same time help build character. The project is designed to help young people make positive decision for their lives. They will learn to work in groups and to be creative and imaginative in their thinking, writing short plays and performing them to the rest of the group. It will be fun and positive for the young people involved.
It will take them off the streets, from loitering and anti-social behaviour and prevent them from being pouched by gang members and drawn into the culture of the gang lifestyle. These workshops will develop them as individuals empowering them to become better citizens and hopefully steer them away from a life of crime and dis-orderly behaviour.
It will also give them an insight into the opportunities that are available to them. And at the end when the young person has completed the sessions they will be given a certificate and the opportunity to perform at our next showcase at the Voice of The Youth Show.

The Birmingham Victory Youth Project has a “user led inactive project
called The Voice of the Youth. The Voice Of The Youth empowers young people to address the issues that they feel are important, through a medium that they are comfortable to express themselves through – music.
Through their own music young people are viewing crime & gun crime, and why possessing a gun in particular as an unfashionable thing to be apart of or associated with. Through the project we are looking at young people becoming better citizens, encouraging respect for one another and that education is important.
The BVYP meets on a weekly basis in Newtown and has addressed in more detail issues that concern young people in the area. We have looked at, Learning day-to-day life skills, Relationship issues, Guns and gun related issues, and are looking to run more workshops for young people to attend which will cover Drug awareness, Citizenship (including skills required for a youth forum) and Heath Matters and sexual health and risk taking behaviour.

Am I just being negative?
I have noticed that there is a lot of money and effort being pumped into 'the arts' for so called disadvantaged youths.

| I'm sure that some kids do derive benefit from that type of programme Tahliba e.g raising emotional intelligence/team working/self esteem etc?
