The 1990 Trust steps up campaign against draft Mental Health Bill.
Leading Black led human rights group, The 1990 Trust is calling on the community to support the Mental Health Network on Wednesday 26th January 2005 by attending the hearing where they will to give evidence to a Government committee on the draft Mental Health Bill.
The draft Mental Health Bill will make it will be far easier for people to enter the mental health system if detained by the police on the street. The Mental Health Network, a coalition of Black organisations, along with the 1990 Trust strongly oppose the Bill.
The Mental Health Network is the only Black organisations out of more than 50 organisations that have been invited to speak to the Committee, despite Government figures showing that Black people make up 16% of people in high security detention and 30% in medium risk despite constituting less than 3% of the national population.
Solicitor Chinyere Inyama of The Mental Health Network will inform the Committee about the devastating effects this Bill will have on the Black community if it becomes law.
The 1990 Trust has welcomed the opportunity for the Mental Health Network to voice the concerns of Black professionals, carers and service users who are united in their opposition to the Bill. Many feel that the evidence of only one Black organisation is neither sufficient nor representative of the views of the BME (Black and minority ethnic) community as a whole.
‘It is crucial for as many people from the community to attend this hearing as possible, because if we don’t turn up and support the Mental Health Network when they give evidence it will look like our community really don’t care,’ Karen Chouhan, Chief Executive of The 1990 Trust said.
The 1990 Trust is calling for the community to come out in support of the Mental Health Network when they give their evidence next Wednesday by attending the hearing which starts at 9.45am at the House of Commons, Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House at the Palace of Westminster.
It is important that hundreds of people from the Black Community attend this meeting as it is the only opportunity there will be to show the Government that we are united against this racist Bill that will lead to a lot more people in the community being detained and medicated against their will.
‘The over representation and over medication are just two important areas of concern that we are hoping the Scrutiny process will address. With an all-White committee that has only invited one Black organisation to speak it is difficult to see how this will happen.’ Karen Chouhan, Chief Executive of The 1990 Trust.
Research by the mental health charity Rethink shows African Caribbean men are six times more likely to be sectioned under the current Mental Health Act than white men. 78% of African Caribbean psychiatric patients have been forcibly restrained under the Mental Health Act, and almost 50% do not agree with the diagnosis they have received.

Heck! I just saw this. The hearing was held on Wednesday just gone?
That is something I would have definitely wanted to attend.
Did anyone here attend and if so, can they give any feedback?
Respect
