Hello, I'm new to this chat and not sure if these words will find their way out there! Here's the ting: I'm trying to collect info on postwar West Indian clubs (whether formal "Caribbean centers" or liming nightclubs) in the UK -- esp where black performers played their own music. History on these places hard to find--so if anyone has a story, I'm eager to know.
Peace,
Calypsorock

well there is the leicester african caribbean centre
and the derby west indian centre which came about 1950s found this for ya>>
Derby West Indian Community Association was formed in the 1950’s and was officially constituted in 1962. It is a community based organisation with an established centre and serves the entire Afro Caribbean population of Derby in particularly and the community in general. The organisation is a Registered Charity and is governed by a constitution. The structure is a General Management Committee with elected officers and committee members, elected annually.
The Committee of Management meets 10 times during the year whilst the Executive Committee meets 9 times. The Management Committee is responsible for all issues affecting the day to day running of the Centre, including staffing and the Social Club. The Executive Committee reports back to the Management Committee on all issues before decisions are taken. The Association works collaboratively with statutory and voluntary organisations and other community groups for the betterment of the City of Derby.Over the years the Derby West Indian Community Association has been and remains involved in a number of community and educational issues. We are obliged to take up representation and advocacy roles on behalf of our members. It is important to point out that the Derby West Indian Community Association is not an ordinary run of the mill community organisation. The Centre provides a variety of educational recreational cultural and social activities. The overall aim is for the centre to be able to meet as many of the local community needs as possibleThe building includes:- A main hall, audio room, stage, stage changing room, library, meeting room, workshop, 2 kitchens, bar, lounge, and offices.

@Calpsyrock. Very fascinating work. These places are very very important and need to be documented in the way you are doing. Always been fascinated by old Caribbean social clubs and their origins and roles in community etc development. Been to quite a few but not sure whether they played music back in the day eg Mosside Caribbean Workings Men Club etc. Don't know if the name has changed.
Good luck.

| Thanks very much, LadyDay. This is just the sort of lead I need. Once I gather some promising locations, I want to arrange to meet with older members who recall the 50s and early 60s -- to see what the political and cultural roles of the centers were/are.

Many thanks for the encouragement, Fredblack.
Did you ever see the Earl Cameron film called THE HEART WITHIN? Just about the only film I know of that shows a very early "Caribbean Club." Though what the relation is between the film construction and people's experience is anybody's guess.
Cheers
