Yay i passed two of my three skils tests today!!! ( these are what traineee teachers have to pass before they can gain QTS.  one is in literacy, one is in maths and one is in ICT)  I was soooo relieved when i passed the maths onebanana.gif, it was hard as hell!!  i always knew i would pass the literacy (strong point)  but after i passed the maths i got cocky as hell :Pthinking "this ICT will be a breeze".  i could barely read the questions because i was grinning so much my cheeks were obscurring my vision!!  then i failed it by three lousy marks sport-smiley and now i have to wait til the new year before i can retake it :(  Ideally we should have passed all 3 by christmas, but no biggie.  Will just have to practice it b4 next feb.  But yay me!!!  clp)

If i pass all componants of my course (God willing!!) i qualify next June.  Then i must pass my NQT year (newly qualified teacher).  This is my first year teaching after the course.  If i fail this, regardless if i have passed the course, i will not be able to teach at all (except private home tuition).

NQT stands for Newly Qualified Teacher.  It is basically the first year of your first job.  Your school/LEA has a legal obligation to make provision for you eg giving you a 10% reduced timetable for you to do extra training or lesson planning or just time out.  They must also provide you with, for want of a better word, 'mentor' to guide you through your first year.  You are observed and assessed teaching throughout the year.  If your lessons come up to standard, you pass, if not, you fail.  You can not do it again.  You can not get a new job in a new school and call yourself an NQT.  It is a one shot deal.  If you pass the course, but can't cut it in "the real world" you basically better start looking for a new career!!

to be honest i'm not too sure about NQT pass/fail rates.  I guess it depends on a) how good the LEA you work for is b) how good your school is c) how good/supportive your mentor is and d) whether or not your kids have a propensity to learn!!!  a teacher could work their asses off all year, but if your kids aren't improving then blkbow.

What i do know is that my uni has a very high pass rate and something like 98% walked into jobs after the course (some were offered jobs before christmas in their placement schools!)  the ones that didn't get a job were waiting to move back to their home cities or some other such situation.

Thanks Abissinia!!  I got to plan a literacy lesson (newspaper report writing) and a science lesson (gases around us) to teach after Christmas.  I am teaching the whole topic of both subjects which covers about 6 weeks.  For Literacy i am teaching the top set, so am bricking it!!
