The 100 Black Men of London educating the youth about their history
It’s Black History Month, and the stage is set for the 100 Black Men of London to have its Black History Challenge (BHC) finals on 13 October 2004. This exciting and nail biting event will take place at the BP Lecture theatre, British Museum 1.45 pm - 5.30 pm. There will be music and refreshments as well as special guest speakers including Diane Abbott, MP [Henry Bonsu and Chris Eubanks] - and this event is free!
This is the first year that The 100 Black Men and the British Museum have formed this unique partnership to present the BHC. The ‘Stars’ i.e. the children, of all races, aged 12 to 14, who attend London schools and youth organisations have entered this exciting competition. By doing so they will:
have a chance of winning a trophy; and
learn more about Black history.
All entrants have to read the book Staying Power: The History of Black People in Britain by Peter Fryer. Questions will be based on this text and the British Museum’s African artefacts.
Ken Barnes, president of The 100 Black Men, said: “I am delighted that the British Museum has taken the bold decision to host the Challenge. The popularity of Black History Month has shown that British-Black History is not only important to the Black community, but to society as a whole.
Please RSVP at bhc@100bmol.org.uk to watch the finals on Wednesday 13 October 2004 at 1.45 pm at the British Museum, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG. .
