The bfm 6th International Film Festival presents a screening of The Healing Passage/ Voices From The Water, a new documentary by writer/actress and filmmaker S. Pearl Sharp (http://www.asharpshow.com), on Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. The Festival is held at The Other Cinema, Rupert Street, W1D. Both the filmmaker and one of the film's artists (Ruia Akinshegun), from Los Angeles, will be present.
The Healing Passage explores paths to healing from the present-day residuals of the trans-Atlantic slave trade (aka The Middle Passage, The Maafa), through the work of cultural artists. Among those featured in the 90 min. documentary are singers Oscar Brown, Jr. and Ysaye Barnwell (Sweet Honey In The Rock), filmmaker Haile Gerima (Sankofa), sculptor John Outterbridge and visual artists Riua Akinshegun and the late Tom Feelings.
S. Pearl began the piece ten years ago, after viewing an inter-active art installation by Riua Akinshegun, which asked the public "Did you lose anybody in The Middle Passage?" Both women were surprised by how many Africans and diaspora Blacks were unprepared to acknowledge this part of their history, and how few facts people of color knew about this, "the other holocaust."
