I know Derby Carnival is this weekend. LadyDay or anyone reaching any carnivals this summer, would be nice if you could come back here and say how it was like.

I hear Birmingham carnival is cancelled this year.. which is a big shame.

Notting Hill is a no no..........

The best Carnival I remember was 94 Jungle was live then and for the first time I never followed a soca float!!

Following the soca things was the best fun and its just not about the Rampage or Westwood thingsblkfingerwag not unless you like be dangerously squashed stuck.

The last time I enjoyed carnival was in 96 I think thats the year when JayZ and FoxyB were there and it was heavy.... After that it became a thing where there was beef every year and garaunteed.  Its either moving about in a big group where everyone keeps moving around and never stood still long enough to let you chirps or bubble to a lil sound system or float... just walking *yawn* If you went in a smaller group then when the inevitable beef came you were woefully outnumbered on the wrong side of town.

I ain't been back since 2001 and don't plan to.

From when I saw hardly n e black ppl in some areas i wasnt feeling it-barely n e vibes. THEN 2 top it off, a swedish float with swedish music and blonde hair blue eyed ppl-FOR ME THAT WAS THE LAST STRAW.

No disrespect but when i go to carnival i EXPECT the music and floats from the ppl who started it in the first place-i EXPECT to feel comfortable and the vibes to be there!

@BB/DM nowhere is the fear of African CAribbean people, their culture and what it represents collectively is more apparent than Notting Hill Carnival. Last time I went was in 84 to check out how the police were policing it given the past. Never went back. Complete farce and betrayal of what Marcus Garvey's wife and Claudia Jones had in mind when they created it.

All those meagre "huugly" looking white women whining themselves, on floats as they are Caribbean women makes me sick and is deeply deeply offensive. All those white women from all over the world thinking and drink asssited that this is the liscence for them to whine on you as a black man and push up, in the pressence of black woman. Deeply insulting. Never mind the ritual institution of the Caribbean woman whining on the white police man. Puke..

Multi-racial peace and harmony propaganda, which masks the fear and loathing to our culture and us, supported by a almost military police presence from land sea and sky...

No thanks..reminds me of the Native American Indian ritual of the ghost dance where the white man was so frightened he had the whole place surrounded with battalions armed to the teeth. Just in case some of the people suddenly remember who and what they are and the purpose of the ritual and sh*t kicks off...

When the whites eventually got jumpy and too nervous they ended up killing thousands in crazy gun fire and killing plenty of their own to, such was the fear...

Nope, some warriors got to be left to pick up the pieces me think....confused3

More acid house things and hippies music than Calypso or Soca or Reggae etc

Nuff people just aimlessly bopping about bumping into each other being herded like sheep

Rampage and Westwood are taking the p*** out of us!! Im not having it...

I rather go after party but then I hate clubbing!!!!

@DM interesting info thanx for that. I as at 76 Carnival when it kicked off and saw the way the police and white politicians descended on it after that the famous Willie Whitelaw comes to mind. 76 was the last traditional and proper carnival.

So after that we went every couple of years to check out the situation, because people kept low profiles but also we knew the police were planning big time to make sure if things kicked off they would take revenge for 76 and make sure they control everything that moves.

But the white washing of Carnival started then in 77, but I had no idea the hippy boys them and all that sh*t were now being attracted. But it was obvious given what they were trying to do...

@ FB

The Soca thing is a tiny lil procession with more 'officials' and people umm standing looking important than actual dancers in costume or whatever.  Its tiny!!

All around are white people and white music systems and police... WOW there are police, I think Carnival is the reason Im scared of horses (the way they look at you)

The are a few Carribean food stalls but the are woefully outnumberes by people selling all types of nonsesne.  The carnival is a brand and advertisers are everywhere.  The whole thing lacks spirit and soul

derby carnival went alright. i managed to watch the procession but not go to the actual day. i was told this year there was no vibes about the atmosphere was dead. i wonder if that was to due with th weather as it rained a few times plus it was chilly. the procession was dissapointing but vibes nice still

no fights this year , there were loads of birmingham and notts peeps about and loads of crews , was told there was loads of people there

i am looking forward to Nottingham carnival next. not sure if i wil reach London

Nottingham Carnival is no longer happening. the east midland city famous for robin hood will not be having a carnival. apparently do tolackof funding. this i dont believe as teh establishments always want to put an end to carnivals.

sad as Notts tend to have a fairly peaceful carnivalwith a wonderful stage show.confused2

@ BS

Had you been previously??

When I was growing up as a young one carnival was a mainly black thing and the evidence of us was everywhere, we were the majority there, It was our sounds, food, It was us dancing etc etc.  We could party till late and stuff.  recently carnival has become a corporate thing and they are wiping us out of it, a lil stell band and one or two calypso floats wont cut it, they are trying to shut down the sound systems and force the big ones into parks like its a concert...

Too many people now (wrong people) and ens too early and it lacks spirit, next year Im going to Trinidad!!

You may have enjoyed it BS but I assure you you would have like the 80s or early 90s better.  Others may talk about 70s but I cant remember that (too young so I speak what I know).  Never go NH carnival again.

I can agree with the whitening of Notting Hill Carnival i.e all that acid music an' ting. rTragic if you ask me.  Now they want to reroute it thru Hyde Park. No wonder attendances are falling.

They had Caribana in Toronto 2 weeks back, a big Caribbean carnival over here. This was more like a traditional carnival....bare soca playing. I aint the biggest soca fan but the music sounded wicked.

I hear wunna bout de commercializin an dy-loot-in of we carnival.

I just returned from Barbados' Cropover and Grenada's Carnival. Wicked.

People if we sit back and let our tradition taken, then hell yeah it will. Come show 'em it ours no matter what they do or say. Come down support the ideal of carnival, do it in our West Indian way not the way they dare to make us. Carnival is everywhere we are, it was an act of strength, rebelion. Why all this weak talk of "dem tek carnival".

Never. Carnival IS for we. Carnival IS we.
