Historical context of 16 June

Up until the late 80's thousands of African children
in Britain were classed as "E.S.N" Educationally
Sub-Normal based on their appearance or accent.
They were removed from mainstream education and
not expected to achieve or learn. These facts were
first detailed explicitly in Bernard Coards booklet
"How the West Indian Child is made Educationally
Sub-Normal.

"Blacks must be taught from an early age
that equality with Europeans [whites] is not for them."
Black people were not to receive an education that
would lead them to aspire to positions they wouldn't
be allowed to hold in society..was the norm in South
Africa until 16 June 1976 when the South African
secondary school children took action  in the Soweto
Uprising by organising a 15,000 strong peaceful
demonstration of pupils.

White police opened fire on them with live bullets
and tear gas killing more than 200.
This atrocity sent shockwaves around the world and
led to a huge increase in support for the ANC and
much greater international pressure on the Aparthied
Government
