HIP HOP HAS DESTROYED THE MINDS OF MANY YOUNG BLACK MEN AND I AM SURE WITHOUT IT WE WOULD OF HAD BETTER LOVING COMMUNITIES. ARTISTS SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH THE DESTRUCTION CRIME.

I sit on the fence here. I think its more to do with the mindset of the child, his up bringing, what values does he have, what is going on in his life which allows him to be easily influenced by hip hop.

However I can see the other side as well, the negativity, the hoes, b**ches, pornography, women hoeing themselves, the continuous references to shooting N****rz, the  fake lifestyle.

One problem is that there is not a balance anymore. Back in the 90s you had a balance of the slackness, and the more thought provoking artists, eg some of my favourites Krs One, Nas, Common, Wu Tang etc.

Ever sinc e Hip hop became the biggest selling genre of music in the late 90s it seems all that is being pumped is the slackness.

ILL DEFINATLEY TRY TO REACH THIS EVENT

Its not hip-hop that has destroyed black men.  Hip-Hop is a culture and consists of four elements.  You are refering to rap music, and within rap music there are many genres.  I've been listening to rap music for a long time and overstand that it does have an influence and its mostly a bad one but i'm not gonna say that its throughly rap music that's destroying us as a people.  Maybe what we need to do is instead of watching what the gringo dem is doing to destroy our music that we just take control over the music that our children listen too.

Not downplaying what your saying but because i'm a conscious rap artist I have to defend it a little still ya nah see it.

this seems interesting though

i have seen video 2 in the series and the message is quite strong not quite prepare to watch the remainder.

there is no denying that things that people interract with have an influence on people . if this wasnt the case people wouldnt do studies on the effects on violent video games, exercise versus no exercise.

certain messages and imagery that are contained in music not just hiphop do have an influence. Hiphop may be the focus but i assure you that they have sister sites that also show up negatives in rock music

plus the makers have done their research too

if anyone goes to the above event please give us a review

I agree. Nothing wrong with sitting on the fence. In fact it's the best position to see both sides from as you did.

I don't listen to hip hop much these days because of the lyrical content being heard by the children. I also don't like to hear the swearing and loose talk on some of them. It seems that these days it's the big money makers that we are allowed to listen to. The lyrics are money and sex.

The same could be said of other music too though, Ragga, soca even pop. A lot of the latest r'n'b artists are talking about the same things. R Kelly is a classic. I don't know many of his songs that do not talk about sex and each time he brings out a track it's getting played hard. Isn't he supposed to be locked up for being caught having sex with that young girl?!

There are too many other factors in life without just looking at the media as an answer to much bigger issues amongst us and the relationships with our young people.

I've only seen the second part. I was told about this by family members who were going on like the doc was so on point with its observations but it's a shame the way many things were taken and twisted up.

It wasn't just about hip hop, also about 'neo sou'l artists who supposedly practice/use voodoo for their records to sell. D'angelo's album titled Voodoo was questioned and used as an example. By thanking the ancestors in her album sleeve India Arie was praising/giving thanks to the dead.

The ankh was also described negatively and Erykah Badu's "on and on" lyrics where she talks about "3$ and 6 dimes" which is 3 6's etc. There were other things, such as some KRS one lyrics with the use of God/god so "he thinks he's God or a God" etc.

I was not impressed with it. It's wrong to put information like that out there without research and knowing the facts.

There was a part where they were praying and a woman broke down and was wimpering the pastor/minister was saying its the devil trying to cause a distraction/disruption to the service!

I might watch it again to refresh my memory and watch the first part, but I doubt that's possible befor the event.

I will try and go, unfortunately the family members who should go live outside London.

What up people , yeah I attented the event .

I would of done this earliar but my internet has been down since Thursday.

Firstly NO its the very opposite of Craig Lewis, in fact Twilight was trying to counter the infraudmation which that paster was promoting.
  • Twilight went into differnt aspects of hip hop , h
  • He said that hip hop is basically the black cnn, he then broke the artists into various categories FASHION : Jayz, 50 cents, , etc.
  • He broke down the fact that the artists are like reporters who are basically reporting what goes on in the hood
  • that hip hop started to fall as soon as we classed it as hip hop, and detached it from its african roots
  • how africans in the diaspora try to detach themselves from africa in general
  • how craig lewis distorted the true origins of why the youths wear their trousers hanging,
  • countered the criticisim of the 5% nation  of goids, as according to the bible god mmade humans in our image
  • ill post more info later, my computer is taking too long, and my keyboard is starting to miss out words, and its pissing me off.

its all good hiphop being the voice of the ghetto. does that mean they stay in the ghetto when they start cashing in big cheques. why dont they talk about something more uplifting or better yet a more balanced view

The RZA of the wu sums it up for

http://sandrarosenews.blogspot.com/2007/04/rza-slams-modern-hip-hop-for-glorifying.html

Rza, founder of the legendary Wu Tang Clan had this to say about the negative aspects of today's Hip Hop:
WU-TANG CLAN rapper RZA has blasted the state of contemporary hip-hop for glamorising drugs and crime. The star - real name Robert Diggs - is fed up with listening to the glorification of ghetto culture in rap music. He says, "Hip-hop is just unbalanced. Right now, rappers are glorifying their hell. How you gonna tell me it's cool to live in the ghetto? Who wants to live where you got rats, roaches, pissy elevators, shootings, killings, rapings, drug addicts, alcoholics, all in a four block radius? "Now, out of nine Wu-Tang members, seven are felons... We were the problem of our communities, but we never bragged about it. We kept moving on about life. "But right now, these hip-hoppers are stuck on one thing. They stuck on sex and violence and drugs and partying. Life is way more than that. Especially the day after the party ends. When you get the f**k up the next day, what you gonna do?"

Thanks for that. Yeah big up the wu tang. Though I do at times have issues with some of their lyrics, they  totally cchanged the face of hip hop with their deep metaphors, and thought provoking lyrics. At times when I listen to them I always have to have a dictionary or thesaurus next to me., they used such deep words and metaphors to decribe the most normal situations.

Lady Day the problem is that when some of these artits do , record thought provoking tracks those tracks  get taken off the album. In some of these slack rappers albums you may even find the odd thought provoking track, but guess what...IT AINT GONNA GET PUSHED BECAUSE THATS NOT WHAT THE IDIOT JACKASSES WANT.

There is too much slackness and entertainment, instead of EDUtainment.

The following are to blame
  • the artists for recording such sh*t
  • the consumer for buying such crap, the consumer for complaining and then when friday comes, that same consumer is dancing to the provocative lyrics in the club
  • the recod executives,  for putting a glass ceiling over thought provoking artists
  • parents for not monitorinbg their children enough whilst they grow, for doing vey little to de brainwash the negative images, their children are taking in
  • the radio djs eg funk flex, and the wigga westwood, for forgetting about true hip hop, and sucking up to dickhead artists, and for taking money under the table from label boisses in exchange for CD SPINS, for talking about stop the violence then continuing to bore us with 3 hours of utter bullsh*t, for thinking that their job is done simply because they play one deep track every 2 months

Back to the twiliight talk
  • he also went into ther kelly thing, and said that that kind of thing has been happening for years
  • He also criticised Craig lewises criticism of busta rhymes for being a 5%er. (if you don't already know clewis totally criticized the idea that we as black people were made in the image of god, he even went as far as to call busta rhymes ugly)
  • Twilight then went deep and started to talk about how the various meanings of certain words over the years have changed, eg how the word demon wasn' necessarily a negative word during a certain period (a word many of the elders use to criticise hip hop etc)
  • he then went into how it saddens him when he goes in many ghettos, and see people living in dire poverty giving all the have to the church, whilst the church give nothing back, how there are all these mega churchs opening everywhere, yet these churchs are not doing anything for the community, except controlling them(basically that the church is in partnership with the government)

a negative is a negative. i dont buy that deamon argument at all

before churches spoke out about hiphp they spoke out against rnb rocknroll etc. in tina turner biography she was told off when she was little by her gran for trying to sex up the church songs and put some funky soul in the mix

churches should have an opinion. its the way its done. there are many gospel rappers out there. kirk franklin made a point that its not justabout the music but the message that is being given out. just think teh amount of people who didnt think it was ok to do gospel music in the style of music u enjoy

anyways there are some songs that are uplifting eg nas i know i can etc

but i see both sides, however these artists need to sort their stuff out and so do record execs. i have seen an ad for this 13yr old rapper talking about guns deaths etc and the producer is like people dont want to hear a 13yr old speakinh so grim his reply thats all i know all i seen. rza is on the money when he says ok so you talked about now what are you doing to make a difference in your life whats good

ps meanings of words do change.....however the when you break it down the n word will always have its original meaning. and no rapper can justify keeping it in existance

plus rappers have to do radio friendly versions why not save money and keep it clean or just think what sort of impact words have

The discussion sounded interesting.

I am not sure whether it is worth wasting time on that pastor dude, because pppl will say what they want. Although u shouldn't scaremonger I am not killing myself to promote hip hop to the youth.

The problem with Hip Hop is like most things if you don't cherish or respect things you end up destroying or losing it. As mentioned before the excuse that they talk about what they see is geting a bit tired. You need to devlop the lyrics especially when you think about how other people will perceive these images. They have a social responsibility it cannot just be about making money.

I attended the event, I enjoyed it. I recorded some of the presentation with my mp3 player.

I watched a little of the first part of The Truth About Hip Hop dvd before the event and the part that really pissed me off was when he said "Nobody can conjure up voodoo like them Africans" yes he actually said that!!! He also mentioned staying away from Egyptology. This man really does not know what he is talking about.

Brother Twilight spoke about language, the original meaning of words such as religion which used to mean-to bind fast.

- The importance of having land.
- Culture being education and a way of life.
- History being memory-understanding who you are and where you come from.
- rap- rhythm and poetry, spoken word, storytelling etc
- Musical instruments, roots etc
- Who owns all the labels, BET, viacom, who pays people like Jay z etc
- Artists names and album covers
- Laws and bills
- Africans returning to Africa
- Artists being paid to mention brands in lyrics
- Free Advertising- buyers wearing labels, working for free with no rights=slave, slavemasters marking people with brands, buy the products from chain stores.
- The Romans and Roman church
- Idol worship
- $ bill, taxes, tides, Government Ordinance Department, 10 commandments
- Maat and many other things

There was a question and answer section after the presentation. Hopefully the dvd will be out soon.

The rap today have destroyed the minds of young black men. because rap back then was Beautiful. It was poetry with music. Rythm And Poetry. just listen to Nas-it aint hard to tell.

Though I dont agree that todays rap is all to blame. I think it has a lot to do with todays generation...and the generation before that...And the generation before that generation...the generation that was first "Infected" with self hatred ,oppression, and sadness. it just never went away. it aint hip hop or anything else but us.
