Forum for Women of the Caribbean is inviting women from the Caribbean, either born or of Caribbean heritage, to gather together to discuss a wide range of issues from what independence means to them, to health issues, to the surge in violence in the Caribbean. We’re meeting at Northolt Village Community Centre, Manor House, Ealing Road, Northolt. Admission is free but you must call to confirm your attendance. Nearest station: Northolt (Central line). Buses: E10, 90, 120, 282.
The Forum for Women of the Caribbean (FWC) was established in January 2005, a few months after the disastrous impact of Hurricane Ivan across the Caribbean region. The effect of the hurricane highlighted the extent of the region's vulnerability after many years of unfair economic and trade policies. For this reason, a group of women decided to dedicate some of their time to raising awareness of the threat the region is under and to ensure that the community is aware of the need for continued solidarity and support for the most vulnerable people in the country, particularly the women.
FWC is currently building links with grassroots groups in the region with the aim of strengthening its commitment to raising awareness of, and addressing the obstacles to women participating fully in all aspects of community life. As well as looking at specific gender issues such as violence against women, this includes underlining the issues of: food security, clothing, housing, and healthcare of the community as a whole.
FWC's most recent activities include a debate and discussion on the issue of violence against women in the Caribbean and a cultural evening to mark International Women's Month 2006; a discussion on the way forward for Grenada, one year after the passing of Hurricane Ivan, October 2005.
The basic principle of FWC is to provide support and solidarity to those who are working for social change in the Caribbean . That is, change which will mean a significant and long-lasting improvement in the quality of life and an end to the continued exploitation of the region's human and physical resources.
