 Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of Dwight "Malachi" York in Brunswick.
AP    BRUNSWICK - The trial of Dwight ''Malachi'' York got under way in federal court Tuesday with the gripping testimony of a young woman who said she was sexually molested by the 59-year-old religious sect leader from the time she was 8 years old until she was 17.
   The alleged victim, now 19, told rapt jurors in U.S. District Court how in 1992, only months after celebrating her eighth birthday on a farm York owned in upstate New York, one of York's teen-age followers groomed her for the sect leader by showing a pornographic videotape of adults having oral sex.
   ''She was telling me that was what I was supposed to do to Mr. York,'' the witness said of the instructions given to her by the 16-year-old girl.
   The witness testified she then did what she was told, thus beginning an eight-year period of abuse in which York allegedly had sex with her ''two or three times a week'' - both in New York and after moving his sect to Georgia in 1993 - and in which the acts escalated to anal sex, then intercourse and finally group sex with York and other young girls.
   York is leader of a religious sect that until recently called itself the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors. The group is now called the Yamassee Native American Moors of the Creek Nation, and refers to York as Chief Black Thunderbird Eagle. He was accused by federal authorities in May 2002 of molesting more than a dozen minor girls, at both a house he owned in Athens and at a large Nuwaubian compound near Eatonton in Putnam County.
   York is being tried on 13 federal counts, including child molestation and racketeering charges. An earlier plea bargain meant to avoid trial was rejected by a different federal judge, who felt the agreed-upon sentence of 15 years in prison was too lenient.
   If found guilty of all counts, York would face a prison sentence of more than 90 years, but under federal sentencing guidelines would likely be sentenced to less than half that.
   In opening statements Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Thacker told jurors that York ran his sect in a way that isolated his young victims - making them live separately from their parents under sometimes squalid conditions - in order to make them dependent on him and more pliant when approached for sexual favors.
   ''At its core, this case is about power,'' Thacker said. ''He abused that power to engage in criminal sexual activities with minors, and to structure financial transactions in a criminal manner.''
   According to Thacker, the house in which the young girls lived on York's compound of 400-plus acres had faulty plumbing, oftentimes no heat or electricity, and never television. She told the jury that sometimes the children survived by eating flour, sugar and popcorn seeds. Alleged victims being groomed for York's sexual gratification would be brought to his house, where they would be lavished with good food, candy and ice cream, and be allowed to watch television, the prosecutor said.
   In his opening statement, defense attorney Adrian Patrick said allegations of sexual abuse of children had been fabricated by a small group of York's estimated 5,000 followers, and spearheaded by a woman who used to manage the Nuwaubian's business office but was kicked out of the group.
   ''She was ousted because she was out of control,'' the Athens attorney said, without further explanation. ''This is a collaboration by seven families that had a problem with the defendant. A motive was generated and this is why (York) is sitting in that chair.''
   Patrick suggested that such allegations as anal sex with minor victims would not be supported by evidence to be presented during the trial, which is expected to last three to four weeks, and that it was not ''physically possible'' for his client to have had sex with as many children and as frequently as alleged.
   Jurors were told by Thacker that the organization headed by York made money by selling books and pamphlets of York's philosophies, as well as such items as incense, candles and soap. The prosecutor said that the organization set up multiple bank accounts so that deposits cold be spread around and each time kept under the $10,000 amount that triggers federal reporting requirements.
   All of York's alleged illegal activities were conducted under different guises, from the organization's beginnings as a Muslim sect in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Georgia, where it continued to morph.
   ''From cowboy attire, to an alien, to Egyptian and to Native American,'' Thacker said. ''So the outward picture changed, but the defendant's conduct toward these victims did not change in Georgia.''
   York's trial is being held in Brunswick due to the defense's change of venue request, which claimed potential jurors would be influenced by the massive pre-trial publicity York's case had garnered while being prosecuted in Macon. Each time York had appeared in the Macon federal courthouse, hundreds of supporters gathered outside to chant, protest or hold vigil. Now, with the courtroom closed to all but the media, only about a dozen of his supporters showed up to watch Monday's jury selection on a closed circuit television in a courtroom a floor above where the trial is being held. That number grew to about 35 on Tuesday.
   Direct examination of the 19-year-old alleged victim by the prosecution took nearly the entire day. When the trial resumes this morning, the defense will begin its cross-examination of the witness.
