Excellent news. clp)clp)clp)clp)

I heard about the awards in Haringey which sadly caused white parents to complaine about why Black kids were getting awards for their achievement and White kids were not! Wonder if they were told how many of us have been failed by the system for the past 50years :( these awards and recognitions are well overdue. Let's hope these policies dont fade away over time.

Can't help but feel that this makes black kids look like special needs cases, being awarded for doing exactly the same thing for what other kids do year in year out.

As for being failed by the system. Try being the only black kid in school. Isolated, with no one to identify with, while most black kids these days especially in London don't have this problem. Yet alot still f**k up.

Have to say I agree with the white parents on this one.

If it was funded by our own it'd be fine but if its funded by the board of education or some other G.body then I agree with PeaceMaker. Watch how they come out more British than ''black''. Not to diss it. A community funded award for the right reasons and academics would be much better if its not that already.

The Young Gifted and Black (YGAB) award ceremony is organised by the Kreative Culture Klub (KCK). KCK is a community youth group based in Leyton, East London offering a range of services for youngsters from the age 4 upwards.

KCK is run by black people and the members of the management committee are all black, unpaid volunteers who are committed to doing something to steer black youngsters from choosing the wrong paths in life.  The services provided by KCK are available to all nationalities.

KCK is a registered charity and as such has to secure funding from various bodies as well as doing its own fundraising to enable it to provide the services to help empower young people and to keep the youngsters off the streets.

The YGAB ceremony is not government funded and only takes place because of the commitment of the volunteers who want to raise the profile of black youngsters who are often perceived as being under achievers.   The DfES published data in their Ethnicity and Education: The Evidence on Minority Ethnic Pupils report (published 2005), showing that the percentage of black children achieving the expected level of 5+ A*-C GCSEs levels (2003) was 36%, this compares to 51% for white pupils.

This ceremony sends out a positive message to young people, showing them that despite the fact they may come from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, it is possible to achieve a good standard of education.

As well as the young people receiving recognition for their success, they also act as role models for aspiring students.

@ PEACEMAKER – I have experienced being the only black kid, throughout primary and secondary school and the feelings of being ‘different’.  I have also seen (through my child) the experiences that black kids in London face and yes, whilst they do not face isolation, they experience a different set of problems.
