The Dana Centre, the Science Museum’s stylish adults-only bar and café dedicated to discussing contemporary science, medicine, technology and the environment, is holding two free events to celebrate Black History Month.
Diabetes in the African-Caribbean Community
Thursday 19 October, 19.00-20.30
An unusually high number of people in the African Caribbean community suffer from diabetes mellitus. Why should this be so? And what can be done about it? To help answer these questions, three specialists will lead discussions:
- Jenne Dixit from Diabetes UK will talk about the many misconceptions surrounding diabetes. Is there special food for people with diabetes? Can you catch it?
- A representative of Kings College London’s Centre for Caribbean Health will talk about the latest developments in diabetes management and what may be possible in the future.
- Ruth Austin, who helps run a Caribbean diabetes support group in Willesden, will talk about the practical steps her group takes to manage diabetes where she lives.
There will also be a chance to swap tasty and healthy recipes.
Science of Race
Thursday 26 October, 19.00-20.30
Conflicts of ‘race’ have a long and bloody history. Some think race is a useful lens for studying certain types of disease. But considering our history, should scientists carry out any research in terms of race? Leading experts including Marek Kohn, author of The Race Gallery, will lead this frank and open discussion.
