GLOBAL AFRIKAN CONGRESS – NORTH AMERICAN REGION
P.O. Box 27024, 4190 Finch Ave. East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M1S 4T0
Email: gac_hq_ca@yahoo.ca
September 18, 2006
To: Members of the GAC Zimbabwe Conference Planning Team
Dear Members:
It is with profound regret that I must inform you that low registration and lack of financial resources will not allow for the GAC to host a successful family gathering and solidarity Conference in Zimbabwe October 1st to 6th, 2006 as originally planned.
After consultation with the active IWC members and advisors, it was recommended that we postpone the Conference to a later date. I have accepted this recommendation based on my own assessment of our situation and ability to conduct a successful Conference.
Our immediate task is to assure the members who had made plans and committed themselves to be in Zimbabwe, that we did not take this decision lightly and apologize for any inconvenience caused. We also wish to assure the government and people of Zimbabwe that this postponement in no way diminishes our support for Zimbabwe’s right to self-determination.
Indeed, we are planning to send a high level delegation from the GAC to Zimbabwe to ensure that this message of support and respect is communicated to President Mugabe.
We ourselves must redouble our efforts to educate the misinformed in our community about the intense propaganda campaign some of us have been experiencing of late. It has everything to do with the progress Zimbabwe has made in advancing the cause of Black people internationally, and nothing to do with the so-called “instability in Zimbabwe caused by President Robert Mugabe’s polices. The word “instability is used to fool many Afrikans around the world, who do not immediately understand the monopoly of the media and how the spin doctors of white supremacy operate.
Winning our struggle for justice will always be described as “instability to create fear in order to continue the injustice imposed upon us since slavery and colonial domination.
The land re-distribution program in Zimbabwe has really demonstrated to us , that the white world only pays lip service to the most fundamental of all human rights, as they understand the equality of all human beings to mean “some are more equal than others.
The GAC must now analyse all aspects of the challenges we faced during the past four years with a view of taking corrective measures, and ensuring that a successful Conference takes place in Zimbabwe in the not too distant future. This includes an expanded and systematic financial contribution program for members of the GAC.
We must ensure that Black business people invest in the economic development of Zimbabwe. That the plans of the Blair and Bush administrations to see another Afrikan country buying into the myth that the “poor we have will always be with us, with the “good and “privileged class giving alms to the poor, or engaging in “charitable works to enforce or secure a grossly unjust social order are
defeated.
-more-
I want to personally thank all of you for doing an outstanding job in the preparatory work for the Conference. This postponement is a result of the lack of resources and not due to lack of perseverance, commitment or enthusiasm on your part.
I would be remiss if I did not make special mention of the outstanding work of Evelyn Brown, Patrick Hunter, Glen Watson, Caroline Tangai,Minister Chen Chimtengwende, Bankie Forster Bankie, Joceline Clemencia,Esmond Toppin, Dorothy Lewis, Ray Winbush, David Comissiong, AmaniOlubanjo Buntu and the generous financial contribution of Rupert Lynch.
I will be in touch over the next few days to discuss the next step in the continuation of the planning process towards Zimbabwe.
Yours sincerely,
Cikiah Thomas
Chair
Global Afrikan Congress
