Dear Colleagues

Re:   National Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Awareness Day Celebrations

Date:              Tuesday  25th July 2006

Time:             10:00am  -  4:00pm

Launch:        Celebrity launch 12:30pm

We are holding an open day as part of a National Awareness programme to raise the profile of these two disorders.  This celebration is also in conjunction with PPI (Public Patient Involvement), along with raising awareness of the benefits of being a Bone Marrow donor, particularly amongst the Black & Ethnic Minority community.

Sickle cell and thalassaemia are inherited blood disorders that affect the haemoglobin in the red blood cells.  It may be passed on to children if both parents are carriers and this result in severe clinical symptoms.  Most notable are chronic anaemia, stroke, high risk of infection and the painful crisis which sickle cell sufferers have to endure.  Those individuals with thalassaemia major have to live with the difficulties associated with being transfusion dependant.  In Britain, sickle cell and thalassaemia affects people primarily of African Caribbean descent, Greeks, Turks, Italians, Eastern Mediterraneans, Asians and also Europeans.

The open day will offer an opportunity to learn about all aspects of sickle cell and thalassaemia.  It is aimed at the following groups:

The general public

Health and non health professionals

Service users

Patients

Educational establishments

Social services

Probation services

Housing and community organisations

There will be poster displays, audio-visual aids, and a range of literature, interactive programmes and practical demonstrations with experts in the field at hand to answer any questions the general public may have.

The activities will include:-

  • indian head message.
  • reflexology.
  • health & happiness presentation.
  • free health checks.

  • herbal vine.
  • healthy eating.
  • healthy juicing demonstration and sampling
  • NOWGEN interactive stalls.

  • presentation of sickle cell & being a donor.
  • face painting.
  • nail painting.
  • henna painting

  • quizzes.
  • Musical performances/dance.
  • free advice on tracing your family tree.
  • a variety of health stalls.
