Love how the media present things to the public such as an event not so long ago in their own backyard. Most people silently say to themselves "been there done that, let move on" or avoid it altogether. Justice has not been fully served in these situation. One of the "officer" involved is living with a family,"security consulting" it seems and enjoying pension and underneath the surface of these stories many of the youths are 'forgotten' and probably had to deal with other "scourges" and battles to fight after the event like drugs, education, employment etc.
I wonder if a good percentage of the youths involved are in profitable avenues from the event like the officers.
Yes, things are moving along. But what direction.
A Lord of the land seems to put a personal touch on the matter.
Lord Scarman’s public inquiry blamed both sides and recommended changes in policing methods, more black police, local liaison committees and a Police Complaints Authority.
I wonder has he followed his recommendations to the core. Or was there 'opposition'. Adding his authority in follow-ups.
But BBC has a nice survey discovered after reading these sites on Race and Immigration?
Alot of one shot issue being asked and percentage given.

it's going to be on from 7pm to 8pm. This should be intresting as i have never seen any documentaries, only commentary on the riots. It happened six years before i was born, and i know from family members that the tension between the police and the African community, as well as discontent about the lack of employment, among other things up and down the country was very high.
I'm sure it will be an interesting watch!

Concious sistah...you know that day was one of those surreal moments in life you just never forget...
It was almost like a sci fi movie for me and my friends..one minute we are celebrating a birthday....next we wake to find Brixton burning down and people looting like it was the end of days...
If you can imagine a situation where there is a burnt out car overturned on every street between Arce lane and Altlantic rd...you begin to imagine the chaos.. if you imagine every shop in Brixton bar none stripped of everything worth carrying you're getting close..
If you imagine a scene of war, that looks like Agincourt and Zulu...Africans on one side and Police bex no bloodclaart on the other... and flying debrie over head.. Believe me when i tell you it was a miricle no one was killed that day..
It was literally like the entire population had been infected by a mystery plague and we were the only ones uninfected..strange strange day...

I feel that if one took place today, it would probably be even more crazy. This is because many people especially the younger and ignorant ones would see it as an invitation to take part because of the fun and sheer excitement, rather than sending a political or social message! It would probably spread through South like a wildfire, and spurn off other riots in the other 3 corners of London.
to all the blacknet villagers, if a riot was to happen in 2006, what do you think would be the significant factor/ factors that would have influenced one.

I really look forward to watching this tomorrow. I wasn't too far when the Broadwater Farm riots had kicked off and remember hearing all the commotion through my bedroom window. The interesting thing is people used firearms on the police even THEN so if it happened in 2006 bwoy, stay in your yard!

After 25 years, I finally admitted to my mother that I was there.
She clutched her stomach, as it tightened in fear.
Glad she found out now rather than earlier - can only imagine the licks I would've got!

At that age I didn't really understand what was going on, but I knew it was a good thing....

I was curious to know precisely when Blacker Dread was appointed as an Official Talking Head on all issues relating to Brixton and the events of 1981. He also appeared on a recent documentary on Bravo on the same subject.
Government funded "communty leader" Lloyd Leon did not mention that together with the late Hector Watson, he was one of those who called for tougher police powers after the events of 1981.
What became of Anthony Morgan, the refrigeration engineer who always just happened to be on the scene to "mediate" with the police whenever a riot was about to break out?
Who eventually killed Michael Bailey - whose stabbing actually triggered the initial incident on the Friday night? (Was he killed in the 1990s?).
Did anyone spot Frank Bruno's big brother amongst the most vociferous of the spokesmen on the Front Line?

Liked the analogy of Willie Whitelaw - "White" & "Law".
I didn't know that at that time 1,000 Black youths were stopped in Brixton IN ONE WEEK.

Lady Vee: just finished watching a recording of the show.....
For the title of the programme was misleading it wasn't the battle FOR Brixton It was an UPRISING of Black people against the Police... I also noticed that the programme skimmed over the fact that the police were arresting people illegally on the 'sus' law..
When they mentioned 1000 people being stopped in one week, what the programme carefully omitted to say was how they were stopped and how they were treated when stopped... The police didn't just STOP you, they racially insulted you, actively provoked you into attacking them and then arrested you for assault and resisting arrest on top of what ever bullsh*t charge they could make up...
I knew one poor sod, who had been stopped 4 times in that same week, my key spar got stopped outside the bus stop adjacent to Barclay's bank.. they made him turn out his pockets at the bus stop in broad daylight..and insulted at the same time..
The programme als mentioned the New Cross fire, but it didn't mention how the police tried to provoke us that day, when we were marching peacably..they didn't mention either that when in the same week irish teenagers got killed in the republic in a fire in a disco..the QUEEN rushed to send her condolences..and never once did that grey haired b**ch ever acknowledge the New Cross victims... a lot of us felt pretty insulted by that obviouse omission too..
But did you notice that piss-a-bed Paul Boteng...as a Brixton Lawyer...note that was the same b**ch that stood next to Sir Paul Condon after the Lawrence inquiry telling us he was not going to sack the b**tard... That should tell you how much that geberation of BLACK politicians sold us out....remember now Paul, Diane and Bernie Grant got into Parliment on the BACK of the two Brixton Uprisings...

Maybe I'm being funny, but why did the commentator keep mentioning the White youths who also rioted? There was also a mention about Asians...I didn't see any of them on the day - did you???
What got me was people warned the police to withdraw, but in their arrogance they stayed to "reclaim the streets".
They got their arses kicked - especially when the molotov cocktails came.
Hubby has a deep hatred for the police because of that time. He was stopped five times last year while driving his car. They also wanted to arrest him for carrying a weapon, a screwdriver. Did I mention that he's an electrician????

Lady Vee: you know I forgot to mention two points in my last post on this subject... Talking purely from the scene I saw from being at the riot myself..I would definately have said that at times there were perhaps more Europeans there than Africans...and certainly the Europeans were looting as much if not more than the Africans I saw on that weekend.. It was interesting however thatat the time the media made it appear that this event was 100% Black and that we did all the damage not true...
The second point of interest that was confirmed for me 25 years on, was the presence of plain clothed police looking to get revenge on the night.... On the saturday, I personally took a couple licks from a white man I suspected at the time was a plain clothes police...but I was never able to prove it..
These guys as described in the programme were just roving around hitting any BLACK person on sight regardless of guilt or innocence men or women.. I got caught on Atlantic rd in a pincer movement of two groups of very angry police officers.... I took a blow to the head and nearly got nicked by uniformed officers my friend wasn't that fortunate...
