Press Release
For immediate release
WHIRLWIND HITS THE UK!
New Black paper builds on powerful legacy
The Alkebu-Lan Revivalist Movement, led by its Spiritual Leader, the renowned community activist Brother Leader Mbandaka has answered the call of the Afrikan (Black) community for high quality, independent, uncompromising news by launching its new bi-monthly newspaper – The Whirlwind – The voice of the nation, at the 1,000 strong gathering at Alkebu-Lan Kwanzaa (the UK’s largest Kwanzaa celebration) in December 2005.
The paper is inspired by the legacy of the visionary Pan-Afrikanist, the Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey who stated in 1925:
“Look for me in the whirlwind, or a storm. Look for me all around you, for with God's grace, I shall come back and bring with me countless millions of Black men and women who have died in America, in the West Indies and those who have died in Africa to aid you in the fight for LIBERTY, FREEDOM and LIFE.
The Whirlwind brings news, views and reviews from the heart the Afrikan community in a fresh, challenging and invigorating way, from a perspective not covered by the mainstream media. The principle of self-determination has been fully applied in establishing this uniquely important venture and it is now time for the Afrikan community to define reality and speak for itself - without fear or favour - instead of being spoken for by others or in the interests of others.
The first edition features: exclusive coverage of the glorious “Royal Marriage of Bro. Ldr. Mbandaka and Sis. Kai Ouagadou - highlighting the beauty and splendour of authentic Afrikan tradition; an in-depth analysis of the Birmingham situation - putting it in a crucial historical perspective; business focus; fashion; reviews; a children’s page and much, much more.
The Whirlwind is committed to reaching a broad spectrum of the Afrikan community, therefore we will be adding new features to every issue. From our next edition (due out later this month) we will include sports, health, youth page, music, what’s happening on campus, recipes, Saturday Schools profile, religion and a letters page.
Marcus Garvey also said “Let no propaganda against the race go unanswered. And with The Whirlwind on the scene… IT WON’T.

Only one copy every two months? If it's going to make any sort of mark, it will have to be available weekly (as a minimum) or people will lose interest.

i bought this paper yesterday in brixton market; i have to say it is very good, the articles are very well written (i always look out forr quality writing) and i'm going to try and track down the 1st issue, the one i've got is the 2nd. It covers allot in issue 2; the incident in Birmingham Lozells area last year, an overview of a kwanzaa celebration held in December 2005, the churches 'apology' for slavery, the proliferation of the word urban in 'black' music', Afrikan' radio stations... this is just the tip of the iceberg, it touches on many of the big topics that have happened in between the papers publication.
i really urge people to support this paper, just buy one issue and judge for yourself. if you're in South London, you can buy it from a 'Black' owned book and card shop situated in the indoor market at the end of Electric Avenue, Brixton, closest to the recreation centre (i'm not actually that part is called electric avenue!), if you go down electric avenue, and keep walking until you come to the road that divides electric avenue, cross it and one of the entrances to the indoor market is on the right hand side, and have a good look as well, because i' haven't paid much attention to Brixton Market in years and years and in this particular part there are loads of black business, i was pleasantly surprised. i'm going to collate all their details and start putting them up on sites. it's such a shame that there are hidden away in this area of the market.

I've bought both issues of the Whirlwind, and i agree with Blu Oshun, the articles are very well written, and the subject content is very good as well. I think that it will start out as being a newspaprwe published every 2 months, then become more frequent, as they get more writers.

This may assist would-be readers in the Brixton area who aren't looking for an excuse to purchase an African owned publication - the shop concerned looks like this:

For those still unsure how to find it, the address is:
79 Brixton Village (formerly Granville Arcade)
Coldharbour Lane
Brixton
London SW9 8PS
(7 minutes walk from Brixton Rail & Underground Stations - Victoria Line)
Here is a map for those who are still having difficulties locating this particular outlet for the newspaper (please click)

MGL, this is the very shop i just discovered and bought the paper from!! It's such a lovely shop as well, just looking inside it you can see real care has been taken in setting the shop up. Right next to it there is also a Rastafarian owned flower shop, this little area inside 'Brixton Village' has got so many African shops it will surprise anyone who is familiar with seeing the usual Asians and Turks running all the businesses. Seeing this has really inspired my little exercise whereby i'm going to write down all the names and locales of African stores and put them up on any African Org site that has such a space for promoting African Businesses like Ligali is doing at the mo'.
Also, in Peckham on Rye Lane, the indoor market next to Superdrug and opposite Woolworths, has loads of African businesses as well, there's also an African bookshop called 'Hylton Estates and Books'. Go in and then turn to your left and once again, a plethora of African Businesses. While i've started, one of the little road on Rye Lane, the end approaching the Park, is full of African owned foods shops. They just seem to be on the periphery of the action.
I really should have just started a new thread here shouldn't I ?

Thank you Sista Girl!!
I just logged back in after a few months away, saw the news about the paper and wondered where near me can I get it. You answered my question for me before I asked anyone.

Prediction: it will sell out to bluefoot
" it will die never to be heard of again
" it'll reduce itself with hard-hitting African strengthening headlines as: 'hamster hurled over hoover'
Then again this one might surprise us.

All been reading it since it came out and very supportive of it.
We will not be able to sustain an large indpendent black newspaper in this country because of basic demographics and economics. But we are able to sustain relatively specialist papers and journals with a achievable target base of core members or subscribers...
