Ermm my laptop has officially flat-lined,not surprising since it was as old as Methusalah,it was the lap-top equivalent of a Delorean and unless I can find a part for it on E-Bay or something, its pretty much finished.

So am now saving up for a Mac.

Services will be held at................

Oh,the pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*WAIL*blktears

Dont think i'll be cremating as its not environmentally sound for inorganic materials,so I think I shall hang on to and maybe take it on the Antiques Roadshow in 2010:)

I really dont like it in the Cafe, people talking and what not and looking at my screen,I just sometimes wanna scream mind  your business and shut the fook up!!!,but then I quickly remember that im not in my yard.

By the way if anyone can recommend a Mac laptop in the region of £500-600 pounds, just need it for basics,ebay,forums,i-tunes etc..it doesnt need to be all singing all dancing.

Do you need a laptop, JB?  We were looking for a Mac for my sister-in-law, G4 iMacs were going for @350 on eBay... we are talking 1 gig processor, 512 Mb ram... 10.2 and up OS (I think Panther)

New ibooks run 600-700 quid.  Bet you can get cheaper ones refurbished.

RIP old laptop...

I have a G5 i use for work, as much as they look lovely and the graphic is brilliant i definitely don't recommend MAC's especially for browsing the net.  I personally all together avoid switching on mine if i don't have too.  The only people that should use MAC's are designers other than that a nice Dell, Toshiba is your friend... Personal favourite is Tosh, I worked with Tecra, portege, M100, and M2 for 2.5 years and never had any major problems.  They are quite light to carry, easy to get used too (will require external mouse), nuff space, easily maintainable, built in Bluetooth, wireless, slightly costly thou. I also had dell latitude lol and I still use Dell C610 which still runs very nicely, the only Dell that had issue (hardware) was C400.

Anyway, the Stratford computer fair is good, there is also a computer fair in Tottenham Court Road.

I thought I was the only one that like bargains, Stratford computer is highly recommended.

Why not try Linux, virus free + you get all the software for free.

No Sir... I think you mean VIVA LA Windows...

I am currently writting a Mac version of some software... and it has been a frigging nightmare, they make life incredibly difficult..

Just think about this... One button mouse press.. I mean why oh why would anybody find that comfortable.... when there is 6 button mouse on pc which allows you to do most actions..

And when your Mac breaks down... ermm who are you going to call?

In other words MACs are like bimbos... good too look at but lacks any depths... smoking-devil

No no no... Mac is expensive to buy... and expensive to fix, I remember back in my Uni days... I manage to build my own desktop pc from buying parts in a computer fair got home everything done within a day, high spec machine... is that possible with Macs? nope

When one of the parts broke down.. went to computer fair bought another part....  got home fixed.. can u do that with macs?....

And come to speed and perfomance... High end Mac was put through its paces against Pc.. and you never guess who won... .YUP Viva La Pcbanana.gif

Although when it comes to display.. Mac to have the edge... no doubt

Hi it's me again reporting from the caff,I hate it here, there's a guy sitting next to me chewing his gum so loud and hard I swear he is gonna swallow his tongue in the process,I keep shooting him dagger like stares,he's not gettin the hint,so ive now just put my I-pod on coz I cant take it anymore.

Anyway guys thank you for all your advice re replacement for my "baby"

I thought about getting a new Mac just because I heard they a less prone to viruses etc ,or they dont get any at all.

But truth be told I was the one who mashed up my old laptop, there was nothing wrong with it until I stumbled out of bed completely disoriented, tripped over some wire which my lappy was connected too, then somehow manged to wrench the socket out.(Not a ver y graceful visual I know).

So when I took it in for repairs I was told it would cost X amount to repair but he himself couldnt do it,so I thought for that amount might as well upgrade.

Then I decided to check E-Bay(E-Bay is your friendbanana.gif)and I am bidding on my exact same lappy(and it will only cost me £30 more than the repair to my old one) there and if all goes well I should be up and running again in a week,-time it takes the check to clear etc ,etc if I win.

So until next time guysblktype

@Jett what laptop are you bidding for and can you give me a hint on how much I’ll be looking to pay?

@blackthought maybe the way we use our MACs is different to the way Kunjufu uses it?  For e.g. I have both OS X and Classic on my G5. I use my MAC to primarily access the Netware servers, but I also occasionally use classic to access outlook as exchange 5.5 isn’t compatible with OS X, same for quark.  Also the only remote control software I know of that can be installed on a MAC is Timbaktu which imo is sh*t.

I don't know if it's to do with what i use it for but i find there are way too many things that are wrong with MAC than right, at least with OS 9 the fact that you can literally copy any program from one machine to another lol no licence required used to make them quite attractive, but you can’t even do that anymore.

This thread has turned into PC Vs MAC, maybe you should move it to the IT forum lol

@ABs

It definetly must be... I would never use a mac, but due to customer demands for our software to be compatible with Macs.. what do you know, I had to get acquainted with G5mad-moonie...

My old lap-top is an IBM Thinkpad and the one I bid on which I just found out I won,is also a Thinkpad.

So catch the joke now................

I picked up my dead lappy from the repair shop today,he cant fix it but told me that some others may,I phoned around for some quotes which were extortionate, but the repair man showed me how I can get it to work if I hold my hand round the back of the computer to keep the socket functioning,so basically I would have to operate on my lappy with one hand, whilst the other gets cramp!

So suffice it to say I cant really be dealing with all that,so I have built a configuration of props round the back to keep the socket powered,I cant so much as breath hard otherwise the lappy goes off,so basically I have about 15 minutes before the whole house of cards comes tumbling down.

I'm having to read everything really quickly:)but i'm greatful to have even a little bit of internet access before the new one comes, that internet cafe was getting me down, the keyboards were filthy, who knows what kind of scabies I may have caught in there.

That's about £200 this end,I dont know what SUSE 10.0 is(I am a bit TechnoDumB,no a lot Technodumb),anyway the Thinkpad I bought off E-Bay was in the region of what you paid,it comes with a bunch of software and some other extras so think it's good deal.

But I have since found by building a little mountain of things at the back of my lappy keeps it working periodically( cant really explain the visual you will have to use your imagination)  but it will just switch itself off randomly coz it's hurting and does need a new part, but if I am gentle with it ,it will keep working for half hour chunks and then I have to re-jig it again.

Anyway hopefully it will keep me going til the new one arrives at the end of next week.

Lost in the Linux Zone.

Sorry, SUSE is a distribution of Linux, 10.0 is the latest version.  It's kind of German I think.

=========================

It sounds like the jack for the power connection on the motherboard is cracked.  I have seen that before.  The proper way to fix it is usually to replace the motherboard but that would be expensive.  What could be done is solder wires to the motherboard at the power connector and run the wires out the hole and solder another connector onto the wires.  It wouldn't be very pretty but it would work.
