Maroon Heart wrote: People define themselves based upon their own understanding. This understanding is influenced by genetics, their education and the political forces that exist around them.
My parents were born in Jamaica and they both had black ancestors all the way back to Slavery. They have both told me stories about the family and this has helped inform me about my African identity.
My father (RIP), always stressed the importance of remembering history. He was proud of his Marron blood and was well versed in Maroon History. He would often ask me "Do I know where I come from?" I could only answer tiredly "I know!"
Travelling through Africa and the Carribean I have seen no contradiction in calling myself African. Being an African helps give me a framework to understand the History of Black People in the West Indies. The majority of people on the Island of for Jamaica for example, in the last 500 years have been of African descent. These people have had a continuous history up to the present day. Their history, represents the history of an African people who have endured Slavery, resistance to that oppression, colonialism and now so-called Independence.
My father said (and I agreed with him) that "slavery made so many people crazy!" One of my definitions of Mental Illness is an inability to control and utilise the intellect.
White people with a distant African fore-parent will still call themself European or of European descent, Indians and Chinese too. How many people in the USA for example apart from Black people, talk openly about the African Blood in their veins?
This is, for them, natural normal and intelligent. A black man with a Irish great Grandmother will say he is not African because of this reason. They do not take into account that the majority of their Ancestors have been of African descent; the fact that they are perceived as someone of obvious African descent and treated in that manner, is seen as, not important.
I have even heard "jet black" Jamaicans say they have no African blood in them, whatsoever!
This to me reflects the inherited legacy from previous generations who went through years of slavery and colonialism - white supremacy.
Those of us who cannot see the continuous and consistent oppression from our enemies as well as our continuous resistance against it , will also not see the fact that being of African descent (African) has always being an important factor Europeans have used to oppress us.
When a White (or Black)policeman sees a black youth driving an expensive car and assumes the youth is a criminal, he does not think "is he Jamaican, Nigerian, South African or Guyanese, he simply see an African and moves in to harrass.
This does not mean we should not have pride in the nations we reside in today. Jamaicans and many other Black nations have much to be proud of. But in order to historically analyse our history and that which unites us - our Africaness stands out, loud. Everywhere on the planet that you find us.
Our African ancestry is what links us as a people. Some of us may have more African blood than others but we are still a people. To celebrate our AFRICANESS or that which we share is a kick in the face to those who believe that devide and rule will forever leave us weak and at war with ourselves.
African people come from Africa. Africa is our historical home.
Africa is a beautiful, huge Continent filled with natural resources. The intervention of European power into Africa's history brought slavery, colonialism War and menticide on an industrial scale. I am of African descent and ask no one the question, " where do I come from?" I know.

I am half Jamaican and half Guyanese but of African decent.
I have read all the posts on this and all I can say is for all those who say that they are black and then deny their african ancestory cannot be called black.

I'm from the United States and I have done a lot of research on my family. I'm proud of my heritage. I have always identified Black/African. If anyone looks at me thats how they see me. I have European Native American and obviously Afican Ancestry. I'm not ashame d of any of it.
I have talked to many who will not identify as African and look at Black as seperate. Some also think that the continental Africans look at us as not African. People are getting confused with culture and ancestry. I tell people it dosen't matter that we have mixtures orhave lost a large portion of African culture. We are still Africans. Most disagree with me. They feel the term African doesn't describe us beacuse of loss of culture and our diffrences.
It is a shame that the effects of slavery are still upon us. My maternal grandfather was a Louisiana Creole. He grew up in a French world but understood he was black. My grandmother who he married, raised us all in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. I never had a problem with the word African.
I know someone that even told me that there was nothing African about them, he stated. I said just look in the mirror. And those colrs that you wear are Pan African colors! Perhaps we will one day get on the same page.

| yes, because of slavery, so many blacks don't know their heritage. However, I was talking to a friend that's a biology major, and he said that there are certain genetic/genealogical techniques that allow one to find out their ethnic heritage. Now, I'm sure it probably just determines whether you're black, white, Asian, etc. However I'm still interested in actually finding out more about this(i'm a biological anthropology major).

My father is Black Honduran (his mother was black Honduran and Trindad indian, his biological father was white hispanic from Belize). My mother is African American, her parents were father (unknown), mother, Black Bermudan.
I was born in U.S., I consider myself black/hispanic, as I speak both languages. I have always identified most with Carribean peoples, having been raised by my grandparents (Grandma (Honduras) & her husband, Grandpa, (Barbados). I have never been able to relate to other African Americans, our values were always just different.

Wow, neat topic, neat forum, I stumbled across it while looking up sensitive skin issues. I'm glad I did.
I'm new, needless to say, and I'm mixed (technically am I allowed to post here?). My father is African American and Native, while my mother is WASP. Growing up, my father insisted that I was black, but never gave me the context from which he was coming from. Granted I was a youngster and probably wouldn't have a clue, although I do remember him explaining that "one drop" state of mind. However it didn't help matters since I live in Canada, and he was born and bred in Philly, and now living in Buffalo, so the state of mind is a bit different.
When I think of myself, I generally think that I'm Canadian first. I'm aware of my history (thought I'd love to learn more, especially my family tree), but honestly, it seems so distant and removed. It sounds terrible, but I'm being honest. I don't primarly think of myself as African, I grew up in a community with a lot of Africans from various countries and West Indians and the differences between those groups seemed like night and day, let alone what an outsider like me just observing on the sidelines. I don't think I so much deny any of my ancestory, I guess I just don't connect with parts of it. I find that a lot of mixed people feel similarly. I belong to several groups, but I don't belong. I'm welcome, but I'm shunned, the only group of my ancestory of which I've connected with and actually feel like I belong would be my native ancestory. That said, I have strongly connected with several woman throughout my life from various african nations and it is one of my life goals to visit several different countries for a reason akin to my desire to have children or eat or lust, it's just a draw to me.
Anyhow, somewhat long and rambly, please don't chew on the newbie too hard, she bites back.

I was born and raised in Toronto, which is an extremely culturally diverse city. We (non whites) outnumber them. But needless to say, they still have the power. LOL Racism still does exist, but I would say of Canada, Toronto and Vancouver are cities who are putting effort into ending the divide (relatively, compared to other cities).
Toronto has a good population of blacks from Africa and the Caribbean, although Montreal might have a higher population of blacks from Africa, I'd have to check that. But a lot of them have immigrated in the past 25 years-likewise with many other populations.
There is also a population of blacks on the east coast and south western Ontario who have settled here ages ago to escape slavery whether British or American. They have a lot of interesting history.
Canada is the place where racism usually manifests itself as polite. When it is ugly, blacks and natives bear the brunt of it, which often comes from the police. I have to say, slowly, ever so slowly, things seem to be improving in Toronto.
As for outside urban centres, it's white and native, but largely white. This is reflected in just about all branches of authority.

Nice thread!
My mom's grandma-my great grandma-family were slave decsendants born in coastal South Carolina, in the Charelston, and Beaufort area. Historically they are know as the "Gullah people". My Dad was also of African descent, and had a grandparent that was Native American, but I never had to question my origin because my family practiced many forms of traditional beliefs, and rites, but it isn't easy to trace slave families back to Africa, so I don't know where-on the African continent-they are from. But reguardless of what I didn't get taught in school, I was educated at home that some where in Africa is our ancestrial home. I've never had to question, I know I'm a child of Africa. In fact, I'm moving to Ghana in about 3-4yrs. I can't wait to set my eye's finally on Africa.
Some people have never heard of the Gullah people...here's a link
