I fully agree with the latter part of your above post my mother who has travelled to these countries made the same observation, in fact she found she understood some of the language in some West African countries and she is Jamaican. However I must stress clearly that do not judge Gemini post as the standard voice for everyone here especially those from Jamaica. You said you never knew such a forum existed well welcome and please do read all the threads to see the diversity of minds and you will find many here the majority far from that phrase you quoted "SLAVE MENTALITY" and please note for future reference Gemini is one of the minority of ignorant minds here on this forum in my opinion.

"patois" is not a language and if it was it would be used to describe the language or dialect spoken by people in the French Caribbean (patois is french for dialect).
People in the English speaking caribbean speak English or an English dialect which has very little similarities to West African languages other than sentance formation.
I feel no shame about Africa because I'm not African, I've never denied that Africa has had an influence of the culture of the caribbean, however it is one of MANY influences, something some people don't like to hear.

On my mother's side we are afro american, native american (cherokee) melungeon (another mix) french names so probably the euro-american part is french..
On my father side we are puerto rican (taino, spanish and west african) and spanish
so basically I am american... 100%

hmmm well as far back as i know (which is pityfully not very far) my mothers family go back to France at some point but are pretty much as English as you get, and my Father is half Scottish and half English.
I'm sure there's a lot of mixture in my ancestry if you go back far enough

Anyway i haven't read all what people have written. I see that there was some discussion about Africa, and people seeing it as part of their identity. But i haven't read anything, so i will reserve my comments. When i have i will post about that.
But I will put my origin up on the net. I am fully Nigerian Yoruba, my parents, grandparents and great grandparents were all Yoruba (any further back, i don't know), and damn proud of it! LOL!

Wah gwan by the way I'm a new member.
Anyway both my parents are jamaican. my dad is 1/4 white 1/4 portugese and 1/2 black. My mum is black but has chinese and indian blood somewhere along the lines. you might as well call me black seen as it is the dominant race in my blood, even though i'm kinda worldwide still.
