Slaveship,
Out of all of the people in the Latino community, I've always thought that the Dominicans( not trying to get confused about the people from the country of Dominica) were the most prejudiced of the bunch. Personally, I only knew one dominican( my brother's good friend), but that was it. I used to talk with some people from NYC/NJ and they would tell me the same thing. It's funny though, I would look at them and think they the looked the most Black out of all the Latins. I remembered my mother always telling me to be wary of the ones who are dark skinned or had Black features.( she wasn't just referring to Latinos who has this appearance, but for othernon Blacks as well). She would tell me it's the one's that look the blackest that seem to be the most prejudiced. I didn't think that she wasn't trying to generalize everybody,as she wasn't trying to do, but call me crazy, it does seem that way. All of what they are doing reminds me of what I used to read in the Black Rage book, where it said that they Black woman were buying bleaching crean and straighting their hair to be white and only to discover that they couldn't. It's sad they some of them are doing the same thing , and eventually discover the same thing about themselves.

" Not that Matos has anything against her natural curls, even though Dominicans call that pelo malo -- bad hair".
"If you're working in a bank, you don't want some barrio-looking hair. Straight hair looks elegant," the bank teller said. "It's not that as a person of color I want to look white. I want to look pretty." Taken from the article
Poor Dominican Republic latinocolourednotblack people.....there there.

Who cares? If they don't want to acknowledge the large percentage of African blood in their veins it's no skin off my nose.
Don't worry, when Africa rises and Babylon falls, all the worms will come crawling out the woodworks and will want to be 'black' then.

| I honestly can't be mad at DR people when the whole of the black world suffers from the same problem. When you step into any black hair store do you not see row upon row of relaxers, skin whiteners and extensions? I stopped going to salons long ago and had to learn to trim my own hair because I get nothing but bullsh*t from hairstylists for having natural hair. I've had girls tell me how they have been turned down by some salons for not relaxing their hair, this nonesense goes on in our own backyards.

This is so true. I have been going to the same salon for years. I used to have my hair relaxed and they loved it, always talking about how thick it was and how it suits me. A year ago I'd had enough of the relaxed hair and wanted my natural hair back. When I told them my plan I could see they were vex, and they tried to put me off saying that I wouldn't be able to go to the gym anymore because my hair will shrink up. I then wore a weave for 18months to grow the relaxer out. I hated it but couldn't bear the short hair growing out stage. They made positive comments about the weave. Last month I finally ripped the fake hair out and now have the most beautiful thick natual hair but they didn't know what to do with it and actually broke some small bits off because they combed it incorrectly with a fine tooth combe. Needless to say I will have to search around for a new hairdresser because I still want to get my hair steamed but most of the hairdressers near me seem to only cater for relaxed hair.
Back on topic. Those DR are fools, however, I can't blame them for the way they think. The mentality has been bred into them for generations and even their own leaders were promoting this nonsense so its understandable that the less inquisitive ones would believe the propaganda. I would just shun them though as I wouldn't want my ears filled with that primitive crap, I wouldn't let them near my kids either. I also think they should all visit the US or Easern Europe where the real white people and even Indians that they so want to be will be very quick to tell them that they are not white or Indian just 'light skin N****rs', that would wake them up. Heck my dad and sister are fairer than most of the 'Indian's in that article!
Some of the Guyanese can be like this too. My friend who is black Guyanese is very 'West African (if there is such a thing)' looking with nappy hair. She had a friend for years from school days who is coolie Guyanese and apparently the coolie one and her dad hated 'black' people and would make fun of my friends hair and features saying she looked too 'African'. The coolie girl would only go out with lightskin coolies or white people as she didn't want her kids 'looking African'. When the coolie ones brother went out with a 'black' girl, the family was enraged, his sister would cuss him saying that he would have 'Afircan looking kids and mash up their pretty good hair family! My friend was often witness to these insults and needless to say this kind of thing affected her as she is already quite scaredy scaredy and insecure. She now only goes out with non-black men, she says its not a conscious choice which I don't think it is but it definately is a sub-conscious one because she wants 'pretty good hair' children. This is why I wouldn't allow these type of people round my kids to fill their head with prejudice insecurity and give them an inferiority complex. Dyam eddiot dem!

No offence to anyone but I've heard nightmare stories coming from Barbados... apparently they're still shuffling to serve europeans in hotels and resteraunts. Not apprearing to give them a better service but being out right abused, europeans asking them to move the napkins, repeatedly asking them to do pathetic minor things and so on. The person who told me said she had to step in and cuss off the europeans in the resteraunt because they were taking the piss its that bad.
Got a lot of healing to do.

Yup lets pick on a ethnically mixed people......while different nationalities of African origin are guilty of the samething.
Instead of of the hate filled replies. Try understanding why it is what it is.

Sistren you get that all over the african disapora. People single out Kenya and Barbados for this frequently but personally I've seen it damn near everywhere.

Funny that, in all the times I have visited Barbados I have never seen this.... wow I must been somewhere else.
