@Comfortandjoy. Sorry for the mis-understandings. I think we do ourselves a dis-service if we brush stories of Achievement under the carpet. This story should serve to inspire all of us (Africans, African-Americans, Caribbean Africans, and British Africans). To the best of my knowledge, the majority of Africans in America are not even aware of this report and oblivious to the fact that an article is published documenting their achievements. It is only us here as usual on BNV who have worked our-selves and nerves into a frenzy, rage, anger and probably outright jealousy as in the case of sisters girlfromthenc and Rockette. The rest of the people on both sides of the debate have conducted themselves O.K, although they could have done better.
By the way this is not the first time for me to see people get angry whenever it is mentioned that immigrants are achieving. A couple of years ago, a report was published highlighting the accomplishments of Caribbean Immigrants in the New York Area. Some African Americans flew into a rage when the report suggested that Caribbean Immigrants were doing better than them.
At the end a meeting had to be called between leaders of the African American community and leaders of the Caribbean Community. The Caribbeans who had nothing to do with the Newspaper article that was written about them had to apologise over their accomplishments and sweep all their achievements under the carpet just to keep the peace. Are things so bad that when a person is recognized for his/her achievement, they in turn have to apologise to some people?
Coming back to the issue of brain-drain. In my opinion coming to the West for further Education is actually a GOOD THING that will benefit Africa greatly provided that these students go back back to contribute and this should be encouraged because this is one way of transfer of much needed Technology back to Africa. Coming to the West to work for four (4) to five (5) years and then going back is actually a GOOD thing and should be encouraged because these people will go back with new found skills. The problem becomes a brain drain when these students and workers don't go back home.
Malaysia has sent over 100,000 students to America alone for studies and most of these students went back after working for two (2) to three (3) years in the West to contribute to their economy and their Country has made leaps and stripes into the Manufacturing and Technology based Economy.
This is how we can transfer Technology back to our Countries; even Brutal Dictators knew that. Saddam Hussein the late leader of Iraq was so possesed with Nuclear Weapons and the transfer of Technology that he sent thousands of Iraqis to Europe to study Engineering and Sciences along with undercover Iraqi agents to make sure these students were studying and peforming in class.
Those Iraqi student who go to clubs to party on Friday's and Saturday's were visited come Monday morning by under-cover Iraqi intelligence officers and given a good beating for wasting valuable study time in night clubs. Now that is taking Education and Achivement to another level.Last edited on Wednesday June 6th, 2007 22:35 by Vubundada_Kandaba

@Gmahogany. By the way I was mainly addressing the part where you mentioned that you still squash Negative mis-understandings when African Americans talk bad nagatively about Africans but you do it now with less Resolve and Enthusiasm. We must keep the Enthusiasm up and the fire burning. What then are we to do when we hear that the mighty Gmahogany is loosing Enthusiasm.

How the hell am I being jealous by acknowledging your very own tribalism and making it known that we won't stand for it? Get it straight! The only page I'll be taking from your book is uplifting MY OWN solely!

This does not demean their achievment, but sometimes edcuation in and of itself is not enough. Bottom Line: We can't fall into the trap of letting the Euros define our intelligence by their standards (which they often cannot achieve)

Finally somebody is asking the questions that needed to be asked and who read and understood the article and based on that can make recommendations on what needed to be done next. Are the achievements translating to better paying jobs? Is Education by itself enough without some insights into what one can do with his or her Education? Can we use our Education to better ourselves, our communities here in America and back at home and if so how can we do it? If Africans are achieving in America, then how can their achievements be used to inspire African American kids in inner city neighborhoods. These is what we need to focus on and leave the rhetorics aside.

If you have little to no concern for your own countries then why would anyone expect you to lend assistance to the very people you want to erase from the US landscape? You are clearly not our friend as many of us have discovered over recent years.

African immigrants know our achievements in this country - there is no doubt that we outperform native Americans. (black or white). And yes, it is a well kept secret by both black Americans and white Americans.
Truth is that Africans would rather see their children as doctors and engineers than as NBA players or Hip Hop artists - even if it they do make millions. And so for that reason we push education; it is not an option, it is a requirement.
....and by the way when my daughter applies to college, hell yeah she is going to check African-American and hell yeah she is going to get all the minority scholarships available. So whoever felt resentment at that, I say go suck on an egg. How stupid can you be!
Ivies are begging minorities to come to their schools and giving them a free ride - if native Americans dont want to take advantage of it because they are busy crying about the legacy of slavery, then we certainly will! This is why African immigrants will always outperform native Americans because they do not take advantage of the opportunities of this country.
Would never have thought it but the Euro trash are still suceeding at the divide and conquer. You people are appalling in your intrenecine bigotry and prejudice.
erm....I am not European - I am African.
Let's be real when we talk about bigotry....why not point fingers at your people for undermining the first post on this thread.

Don't use me as the scapegoat for your ignorant comments ok. I asked a question which you failed to answer. Is going to college the achievement your typing about? If so say that, but don't say nothing then try to divert attention from your foolishness.
Btw: Have you recognized the achievements of Dr. Mark Dean? Google him up, then you will know how lucky you're that we can have this conversation. 100
@ Capo - who are you calling ignorant? While you are recognising Dr Mark Dean, why dont you also recognise Philip Emeagwali. Go ahead google him also....and you recognise.
from where I stand you and your ilk are the ones that sound foolish. This thread was about the academic achievements of African immigrants, was it not? or are you unable to discern simple logic? well then, there is no need to ask further about what achievement, is there? unless implicit in your comment is the view that the achievements of African immigrants are not worth talking about.
it is not a matter of debate - it is a fact both statistically and anecdoctally that African immigrants outperform native-born Americans.
open your eyes and look around you.

come visit America and you will see the full force of African American bigotry towards Africans.
I came to the US because I thought as you did and I wanted to be around African Americans who I believed were progressive people; I was inspired by their struggle and achivements. Got here and because I had an English accent, many AAs did not know I was African.
They spoke their minds! LOL!
If you want to be around progressive AAs you will have to be around the academians or those who are enlightened. But the average Joe will not hold you in high esteem (well, unless you have an English accent! LOL!!)

I am beginning to suspect that either you are a white troll promoting the Neo Nazi agenda and if you are not then something is definately wrong with you. I know there are problems between Africans and Africans-Americans but I never have seen anyone so obsessed with this issue as you. Africans in America trying to erase some people from the landscape of America.
Rockette, you are beginning to sound very delusional. Are you studying or working too hard? If so take a break and visit a bar for a glass of wine. You will be remembered right here on BNV. I know that if I had the mis-fortune to be invited to your funeral, God forbid; then I will be yawning again and again as I watch other speakers lie to the congregation about how good a person you are.

Africans in Europe seek new ways to invest back home
MICHAEL DEIBERT
Inter Press Service
Africa’s robust diaspora in Europe will soon have a facility for direct investments in their home countries, a study by the Brussels-based Africa Caribbean Pacific Business Climate says.
“There have been studies and surveys of Africa over the past 40 years but unfortunately, they haven’t helped much. We are looking for some kind of concrete instrument we could set up for boosting diaspora investment in Africa, a senior financial analyst with the group Christophe Malherbe says.
Officials say the study will most likely recommend a closed-end private equity fund, that would invest alongside a group of diaspora investors and provide them with start-up capital. In addition, discussions are underway to provide technical assistance facilities for any such project.
Though remittances have historically involved direct transfers to relatives or friends in the sender’s country of origin, analysts are trying to find ways in which remittances can be used to boost registered bank and non-bank financial institutions, such as credit unions and microfinance organisations, thereby contribute to the country’s overall economic well-being.
Remittances from Africans working abroad between 2000 and 2003 averaged $17 billion per annum, according to a 2005 report by the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa. Total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flowing into African nations averaged $25 billion per year over the same period, meaning remittances account for most of the FDI flows.
Though official development assistance remained Africa’s main external resource flow, Africa’s share of FDI was only seven per cent of all FDI to developing countries from 2000 to 2003, a 10 per cent drop from the 1990s.
“Aid can’t solve everything, observes Karim Dahou, an adviser to the Africa Partnership Forum, which was formed at the G8 Evian Summit in May 2003.
“It has to be well-targeted and well-tailored to areas where it can leverage private investment.
“Bond guarantees, specific guarantees for loans for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the agricultural market ... Africa’s diaspora is not only about investing as a first step, but also to be able to finance themselves and develop in the long-run, Mr Dahou said.
With civil wars in Angola, Liberia and Sierra Leone having largely come to an end, many in the African diaspora are taking an interest in venturing into an increasingly stable West Africa.
“The Europeans have a leg up in the sense that some of these places are former colonies and they still have influence, says Daniel Anagho, president of the Maryland-based African Investment Corporation.
“But the winds of change are coming where it will no longer be about exterior investment but about encouraging the diaspora to get involved, he added.
Mr Anagho, a native of Cameroon, formed his company in 2003 as a way of promoting foreign investment into African countries through consultation, business partnership development and project finance.
The demographics of African immigration to Europe has changed substantially in recent years, with only 16 per cent of African immigrants to continental Europe now classified as “refugees.
Many African immigrants seeking greater economic opportunities in Europe have of late used mid-way staging points, particularly the Spanish-controlled enclaves of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa as springboards for entry.
In the Netherlands, for example, there are more than 170,000 legal immigrants of sub-Saharan origin. Many others are in the country illegally.
In nations with even larger West African populations, such as Britain and France, many immigrants as well as first-generation children of immigrants have become firmly ensconced in the economies of their adopted countries, a fact that programmes such as the ACP Business Climate facility are keen to utilise.
The African diaspora can exert leverage on foreign direct investment since they still have connections in and understanding of the target market, and can bring in access to export markets and transfer technologies, as well as good business practices, especially against corruption, says Mr Malherbe.

African immigrants and black Utahns build ties
Groups seek to do away with stereotypes and increase their mutual understanding
They might share the same skin color, but they are strangers to each other.
Blacks born and raised in the United States say: Africans think they are better than us. They think we're lazy and still slaves. They would rather befriend white people.
Africans say: U.S. blacks think they are better than us. They just want us to perform African dances. They don't care about us.
These are the stereotypes that were respectfully discussed Thursday during a community meeting for the "African Americans and Continental Black Africans" at the Salt Lake City Main Library downtown.
The two-hour meeting, called "The Disconnect: A Conversation Long Overdue," was organized by the Utah Office of Black Affairs.
The purpose of the event was to be open about the stereotypes and issues among the black and African communities and talk about how to better work together, said Utah's Black Affairs Director Michael Styles.
"We continue to not be very familiar with each other and this is just breaking down the barriers," he said. "There's still strength in numbers, and we are still one community."
Lasuba Paul, a Sudanese refugee who's lived in Utah since 1996 and graduated from the University of Utah, said blacks never invite Africans to help organize events but will always ask if they will perform at them. He said neither group comfortable approaching the other.
"The reason we have the disconnect is that we don't think we can reach out to each other," Paul told the crowd of some 75 people, made up mostly of blacks and a few Africans.
Joan Effiong, who moved from Nigeria to the United States for college and has lived in Utah for 30 years, said white folks show more interest in learning about Africans than blacks do. That's why she said more whites than blacks show up to the annual Nigerian festival.
She said blacks "think we still live in the trees."
"We feel the welcoming is not there," Effiong said.
Ed Tanner, a black college academic adviser who moved to Utah from California, said some blacks "don't care" about Africans because in the United States they are not taught to be proud of their background.
"It has taught us to not like who I am," he said. "Why would I like you, if you look like me?"
Regardless, Tanner and others said both communities need to put aside their differences and unite in sharing their music, food, dances and histories.
"Our problem here in Utah is we're ashamed to be black," he said.
In Utah, the number of blacks more than doubled from 1990 to 2000. Today, some 21,000 blacks make up almost one percent of the state's population, according to 2006 U.S. Census estimates.
Styles estimates there are about 30,000 blacks in Utah.
Many in the crowd agreed that there needs to be more communication among the groups. Each group said they would invite the other to help organize events, starting with a Juneteenth celebration committee that only has blacks on it. They also will start educating each other about the importance of various holidays, such as Juneteenth, which celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States.
After the meeting, Tamu Smith, a black Provo resident who moved to Utah 10 years ago, said the event was much needed and the communities had to start somewhere but there "are still a lot of unresolved issues."
"It helped me realize [Africans] have insecurities just like me - and someone has to be the first to say 'Hello,' and I'm willing to be that person," she said.

This whole thread and argument is a big shame and any fool can see the underlying prejudices, so I wont even indulge.
A few good points have been made, but have been glossed over. DSP hit it on the head, and it largely depends on what/who you choose to focus on.
Rocktette, if you can acknowledge that the state of the AAs in America has undergone a vast improvement from what it used to be in the 50's to the present day, then you might want to acknowledge that books written circa 1958 might not hold true today in certain societies in Africa.
p.s Just to clear all the underlying insinuations.N ot every one in Africa is trying to run out of Africa. On the contrary (tho' the would not show this side, a good number wouldnt even live anywhere else).
