Hmm..I wonder..
The event was briefly disrupted by a man, shouting: "You should be ashamed."

Think that'll be 100 lashings in babylons custody!

Watch the news now on bbc, the story is coming up, the headline shows Toyin being arrested in all it's 'glory'.
The disturbance ended when the lone man was led out of the abbey - man where were we..online?

so I'm sitting at home BBC 1 is showing a National Service of Commemoration for the Abolition of the Slave Trade LIVE - I said LIVE. Service is taking place at Westminister Abbey. The Queen and Prince Philip, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown etc etc all present. Kwame Kwei Armah does a reading - you get the picture. About two thirds through the service a lone African Protestor disrupts the service I couldnt make out all he was saying, but what I did catch was:
"you africans should be ashamed of yourself" addressing himself directly to africans in the congregation. he went on to blast Tony Blair and shout why an apology was not forthcoming. he shouted words to the effect how dare such a ceremony be held in the name of his ancestors without acknowleding africans involved in the struggle.
What was so funny was that as it was live there was nothing anyone could do. The commentator said words to the effect we knew this (the service) was controversial.
it was so deep, you could feel the man's rage. waiting to see how they report this on the news...

Well you can only do so much protesting by holding up placards and chanting.

Melissa lol - believe they wouldn't dare!!..it's too public...besides, it's our time to have a say before this slavery hype is put back on the back burner. The struggles of Toyin and co will still be going on after the hype. Ever asked yourself when the next memoral is going to be....this is their swansong, if we don't already in a hundred years time no one will give a to$$.

BBC Radio London just played a clip of Toyin being interviewed after being ejected from the ceremony. He was saying that he wanted an apology from the Queen, not Tony Blair. He described the British as Nazi's and said at least the Germans had the humility and humanity to apologise and pay reparations. they'll probably repeat the clip during radio news bulletins throughout the day
secret service will be on his case...if they arent already

they reserve the beatings for the average black criminal - they will not lay a finger on him. The pursuit may be more subtle, but I beleive someone like Toyin knows the game and he wont stand for any foolishness from these people

Man Toyins face looks like he's turned into a fully fledged warrior, I hope he hasn't lost his tact or his diplomacy. It seems tragic that he was there on his own...easier for babylon to pass him off as a lone madman.
african_woman - this nazi thing, german apology....there were many european countries involved in the slave trade, there have been many apologies for many an attrocity but no one has given an apology to an African. But don't get me wong, our arguments may not be right to the nth degree...but we have a point.
In the european heirarchy it's probably seen as who's going to be the first to lower themselves and do it formaly and officially - I can see the Queen coming with some lyrics of her own. Maybe she might look at Toyin and feel ashamed that she has resident subjects who feel this way. man I can see a new tax relief option for descendants of slaves...maybe a 50% reduction in council tax or something. A kind of paying us without actually paying us bull.

Good for Toyin. The "peace" of that ceremony needed to be disturbed, though I don't like the idea of him being by himself out there, as someone already said. Then again, if a lot of people had been involved, it would have been hard to retain the element of suprise, so that may have been his strategy.
If he is still in custody, having some back up,(people calling the jail, protesting outside the jail in support, etc), would be helpful, and minimize the chances of them physically harming him,or trying to play him like some lone kook.

Perhaps a more exacting account of what took place.
All was solemn at the slavery service in Westminster Abbey ... until a bright-shirted demonstrator let loose, says David Smith who watched the drama unfold
Tuesday March 27, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Toyin Agbetu is stopped by security as he disrupts the service marking the bicentenary of the 1807 act to abolish the slave trade. Photograph: AFP/ Stephen Hird
The slavery bicentenary service was about 45 minutes old and running as smoothly and sombrely as any usual major national commemoration at Westminster Abbey: the singing of hymns, readings from the Bible and an air of inviolable solemnity.
All this was shattered when, from behind my seat in Poets' Corner, a man strode rapidly into the space in front of the altar and began screaming at the top of his voice. The Queen, Prince Philip, Tony and Cherie Blair, John and Pauline Prescott, Gordon and Sarah Brown and the Archbishop of Canterbury watched in stunned disbelief. The bright-shirted black demonstrator, Toyin Agbetu of the African rights organisation Ligali, was only a dozen feet from all of them, with apparently no security guards to block him.
The Archbishop had just delivered his main address and the service had moved on to "confession and absolution". But the reading was stopped in its tracks by Mr Agbetu's outburst: "You should be ashamed. We should not be here. This is an insult to us. I want all the Christians who are Africans to walk out of here with me!"
In a deeply worrying sign in this supposedly terrorist-conscious era, the security guards near my seat were so utterly surprised that they only looked at each other, uncertain whether to intervene. Finally, they did. Seven guards and two ushers gathered around Mr Agbetu and a hand was placed on his arm.
"Let go of me!" he yelled, raising his arms like a suspect confronted by armed police. "I have no weapon! I have no weapon!"
The Queen, on a raised platform and out of Mr Agbetu's immediate reach, watched with pursed lips. The Duke of Edinburgh frowned. Neither seemed frightened for their safety. In the pews, Mr Blair watched with dismay as if already preparing a speech about this "regrettable incident". Mr Brown, whose eyes had been sleepy, was jolted awake. Kwame Kwei-Armah, the actor and writer, dressed in a glittering golden African robe, watched with sorrow in his eyes.
The more that the security men tried to manhandle Mr Agbetu, the more he resisted. Suddenly the interruption turned serious. There were pushes and shoves, even punches. Twice Agbetu and several bodies went crashing into the knees of appalled guests, who were wearing their smartest suits and dresses. All the while Mr Agbetu's bellowing was drowning out the now superfluous service, which had tried to resume.
By now many guests and journalists around me were on their feet, straining to look. There was a sense of danger and drama. It was clear Mr Agbetu would not go quietly. Possibly not without a fight.
After what seemed an eternity, Mr Agbetu was shuffled towards the quire, in the direction of the exit. But he pointed at the Queen and yelled: "You, the Queen, should be ashamed!" The monarch did her national duty by remaining icy calm.
Mr Agbetu was now directly beneath the prime minister. He turned to face him and Mr Blair glared back. The thousands of guests watched in hushed anticipation, wondering what would come next, wondering if Mr Agbetu might even leap on him. Instead the protester screamed: "You should say sorry!"
Mr Agbetu continued walking and shuffling, still resisting the hands being placed on him, still shouting his dissent. Hundreds more guests in the nave got to witness the spectacle. The abbey's ushers still looked unsure quite how to handle him. Finally, outside the building, Mr Agbetu was not bundled away as might be expected. Instead, he gave an impromptu press conference.
"I had always planned to make this demonstration," he said. "The Queen has to say sorry. It was Elizabeth I. She commanded John Hawkins to take his ship. The monarch and the government and the church are all in there patting themselves on the back."
Finally, two police officers took him away for questioning. The service continued to the end but the sepulchral calm had gone. When the guests emerged they were not talking about William Wilberforce.

Prince H - the main thing worrying me is that for all the years of by the book campaining Toyin has got himself arrested. I very much doubt whether it will lead to a conviction but I can see babylon using it as a tool to demonise him.

From the moment I got a glimpse of him on t.v I thought "What the hell is he doing there!!!" So much for security.
I suppose his logic was if Father's for justice did it so why not "I".
Personally I am not opposed to what he did But where and when he did it.........and what he said to the Queen.
But on another level if it showed just how much Kwame Kwei Armah is a house slave then all for the good.
I respect his courage to do so. .

sulunique - this one required stealth tactics. it's the security breach which will be of bigger concern to the government. Your talking Queen and family and government leaders here..all in the same place on their sunny day out.
If africans ever get reparations, let the history books show that this act was the turning point
..besides, we all know Trevor Philips will have his back - I sense a few obe's have been put on hold for this travesty

Hello again, my friends...
(heard about it and logged on...)
I, for one, feel like he spoke what many of us were thinking and wish we had the moment and place to finally say it.
Bravo to Toyin and though they tried to make him lose his dignity, he held fast! I am well chuffed and would contribute to his bail if necessary.
As for speaking to the Queen... she sure as heck aint my queen and I think that strategy dictated it was done with the special collection of ears at this event.

from the moment i stepped in the ligali forum and interacted with the brother, i knew he is different and is not afraid from stepping out of the norm....he discplined nuff black people in that forum in how they should conduct themselves, and when he finished teaching them those refused to conduct themselves as pro-african got banned.....lol
so i am not surprised with what he did, it was just a matter of time!
respect brother....lots of respect!
