either windows or zone alarms keeps telling me active x controls have been blocked.. i get the option to allow but i am unsure... in fact its windows that blocks it. i am guessing its an sp2 thing
what are they and should i be concerned?

Active X sort of links microsoft software to the internet. You could have a web page, like this forum's reply page, which used microsoft word embedded into the web page to let you enter the text.
However as with all things, people could right harmful stuff which uses active X to do nasty stuff to your pc. Your pc is either being over sensitive or it is blocking something dodgy on certain websites.
Unless you seem to be missing any funtionality, I wouldn't worry about it.
